Part 3 here: • Wood That It Were So S...
Every once in a while a project arrives that upon first glance appears straight forward and simple but as more time is spent understanding the nuances of the work involved, well, things get interesting.
And such is the case with the painting featured in this video series. What appears fairly simple is anything but and requires inventive thinking, novel materials and even new equipment to facilitate a successful conservation.
Follow along in this five part series as the painting moves through the various stages and treatments of conservation and restoration.

Hi folks, thanks for watching and commenting- I love hearing from you all. That said, I already know that you dislike the multiple cameras and the audio has issues so maybe it’s not necessary that it gets repeated by everyone. More of what you DO like helps me with the next video. 😁

This is epically dramatic. When he said in an earlier episode that he was going to have to remove some of the wood panel so it would be the same thickness all over, I actually gasped. I was like "No! Julian! That's crazy!". Then when it looked like he wouldn't be able to use his beautiful honeycomb panel, I was on the edge of my seat. AND NOW WE FIND OUT THE PAINTING WAS ALL OVERPAINTED oh my. I was watching him clean off the overpainting with my hands on my face. WHAT IF THERE'S NOTHING UNDERNEATH BUT DIRTY WOOD? I thought. I've never rooted so hard for an ancient painting of a man in a hat before, but look at him. He has such a nice face and a lovely moustache, he didn't deserve any of this abuse. Please, Julian, save the man in the hat.

Hello Julian I am a painting conservator working in Melbourne Australia, currently on lock down, and unable to work in our lab! So, because I love my job so much, I 'm tuning in to your channel to get my daily fix! And, Julian, I love it! I love your clear explanations, your calm, your not 'speaking down' to your audience, and your making our skills visible to the public. And, Julian, I am learning from you, too! I love your adapting and experiementation with non conservation materials to solve a problem. I think we will make use and experiment with thin wool felt as an interlayer. We have plenty of sheep here in Australia, and it's always good to use wool in novel ways! And I am loving some of your handy tools and hints! Great work Julian. You are such an inspiring ambassador for our profession. Thank you so much! Caroline Fry

I actually really enjoyed the glimpse into Julian’s thought process to come to the final decision of the honeycomb board - felt - wood sandwich. It’s amazing how much forethought has to go into it.... knowing the way each material will behave over time, the need for results to be reversible, etc. Like a little field trip into his mind palace...

Because I adore your perfectionism can I recommend some ‘direct to camera’ techniques -1. Stick with directly ahead and then one other angle to the side for emphasis - have three or four cut aways looks indulgent and cluttered. 2. The edit should happen before you pivot to camera not after - so you are following us the audience - not we following you - if we see your pivot you kind of end up like a bobble head presenter. I can tell you are perfecting this - your so close - we all love your work - respectfully David

juanaq I feel line he‘s trying to add a dynamic aspect to his videos. You might enjoy someone talking to a camera for 15 minutes straight but I’m sure a vast majority of people watching these videos enjoy the occasional change of scenery when he‘s describing his processes (me included). It’s already fairly common practice in TV and Film, why not carry it over to KZbin?

@@juanaq The worst part is his equipment isn't good enough to do it. The 3 camera angle approach comes from news tv recordings done in a studio using professional cameras that are synced, color calibrated, and white balanced. You can tell the difference in brightness and color between his camera changes that make the changes way move obvious than they are in a studio with controlled lighting and quality cameras. He should stick to a single camera angle.

As much as I love watching him actually work on a piece, there is something oddly satisfying about the parts where he just explains his train of thought and the steps necessary to be taken in order to preserve a piece of art. Loving the content.

It’s nice that your son is comfortable in your shop while you’re working. Since you inherited the business from your father, it’s a piece of his history and might be something he takes an interest in as he gets older. If you let him do small things to help like tightening the bolts of the clamp machine it would be a great memory

I always love seeing how different paintings look after all the old conservation work is removed but before the retouching. It's sad so much is lost, but at the same time so much is revealed.
