Wood Turned Sun Clock

I have had some maple wood set aside to make a mid century modern sun clock. I started this clock by wood turning 12 spindles. I then made a segmented hub from wood of the same maple tree. I drilled 12 holes in this hub to receive the tenon on each spindle. This allowed the spindles to radiate out like rays from the hub. I did a final turning of the hub and spindles together on the lathe to make a space for the clock. I think this helps to tie the whole piece together.

I really want to thank you from the bottom of my heart Frank, your work is unbelievable. When I first found your videos a month ago, I initially watched the lawn chair part 1, and by the time i looked at the clock again, I realized it had been close to 8 hours and I watched every video you had. Thanks again man, fantastic work.

My parents had one of those clocks. It was a really cheap plastic one from the 60s that hung on the wall till my mom passed a few years back. I always hated that thing but sometimes I wish I had it, maybe hang it in the shop. Maybe I'll just have to make one now instead. Thanks for the video, they're always great to watch.

I used to dabble a little in the animation department - the part where you drilled the mounting holes in the edges left me flabbergasted. One of my favorite things in animation is doing something that cannot be easily figured out by the viewer. As always great job and great project! Thank you.

Some people do a BASE jump to get the adrenaline they need. For us wood turner, we don't need no parachute, we just need projects like these to get our daily dose of adrenaline. As I made my first winged bowl, I felt fine during the time I had it on the lathe, despite all the same worries you had, like do I get a catch, is this really working the way I think it should.... As soon as I took the finished piece of my lathe, I started shaking, this didn't stop for an hour, what a thrill. I bet you'd been shaking for a whole week, at least I would have had problems to mount the hands. Thank you for sharing this awesome piece of art. Greetings from Good Old Germany Peter

yes it was a huge relief when the second turning worked. I think that is why I was not thinking of other options to fill the gaps at the bottoms of the mortises. "Oh that's the only problem I have, I can deal with that."
