When you mentioned the original plan to split the cylinder in half and meet up the tops, it occurred to me that if you make 2 cylinders canted in opposite directions, you could do the meet up by matching half of each to half of the other, producing a continuous pattern, instead of a change in direction.

Enjoy the planning that goes into your extraordinary outcomes. I have turned now for about 2 years and starting to get comfortable with what I can do. I have 2 questions about your setup. 1- how did you fasten your steady rest to the bed. I built one similar and my fastening system is difficult at best to hold it tight. 2- I’ve been searching for the tail stock mandrel that you used to hold the chuck for at least 8 months, would you mind sharing where you got that and the part number. Thanks for your time and keep up the excellent designs.
@donavenzulian

The steady rest is attached by way of two F- clamps. I found the tail stock mandrel on Amazon as a live tailstock chuck adapter.

Thank you for checking out the build. As far as the sentiments, I have quotes written all over the place in my shop. My favorite on the cabinets is by Ansel Adams. Really cool setup Donaven, what do you mean at 2.12 blade shaddowing technique to get two equal parts? Thanks Stu.
@donavenzulian
@donavenzulian Жыл бұрын
With the saw off!! Place a small bright spotlight at the base of the blade on the exit side shining towards the front. Adjust the light for a solid shadow line. Then by holding the stock tight to the fence, adjust the fence to the desired location looking at the shadow line. In this case I wanted two equal parts. The shadow automatically accounts for the saw kerf. Thanks for checking it out!

First let me say that I think the end result is awesome. The colors and the pattern are outstanding. The shape is something else, I like it. The whole piece is great. What a great way to kick off 2023. Now here is where I get myself in trouble. I don't care for your production. You use a lot of speeded up video and that makes it hard to tell what you are doing. You show cutting all the wedges but too fast to see just how. Please, it would be better to show one or two in detail and just say you did 30 more. You have an interesting way to cut the wedges but don't show the set up at all. Then mention the technique but no explanation. Move the camera to the other side of the fence. You created the twisting so fast I could not tell just how you did it. Then you take several minutes putting on clamps. When you have a lot of the same thing to do, please show one or two at actual speed and skip over the rest. For the most part your audience is smart enough to figure out how to do the job after you show the first time or two. So again you skipped over the important stuff. And I like the cat but it got way too much screen time. Your camera position during turning could be much better. If you mounted it directly overhead your lathe your audience could see the profile as it emerges. The view from the end shows nothing. The same problem when turning and fitting the base. I want to be entertained. But I want to be educated too. I hope my comments are meaningful. They are meant to be constructive. I hope they are received that way. You produced a beautiful vase. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

Video production and editing is a whole different skillset from your ingenious engineering solutions to woodwork. The thing about problem solving as you are building something is that you are coming up with solutions as you go along, so adding the challenge of showing it all clearly on camera is certainly not easy. I suspect a lot of KZbinrs do everything twice so they can sort out technical issues first, then build it again for the camera and focus on shooting it. Also there is a difference between a full how-to movie and an ideas video. I think yours is great for getting ideas from and If I ever make something similar I will have to sort out my own solutions because my equipment is different. So a full how-to movie might be more than most people need.
