Wood turning - Eastern red cedar hollow form with laquer finish

In this video I'll be wood turning some eastern red cedar into a hollow form.This is some cedar that was reclaimed from the woods on my property and had been sitting in my shop for over a year. Not sure how long it had been fallen over in the woods. I had to seal it with CA glue to stop the checking in it. When the outside was finally shaped I could hear small ticks/pops in the wood as it was wanting to move but after sealing it with CA all that stopped. Even though it was sealed with a good bit of CA I finished it with lacquer then wet sanded and buffed it.

I wanted to do a ca finish since it is structurally sound and glossy but not set up with all the buffing wheels yet. So I rolled with what I could do.

Very nice, enjoyed watching this, glad the video came up on my suggestions. I've stopped used CA for similar reasons on Pens, as I've had people come back with black hands, and the coating rubbed off and black on the pens. Instead now, I use Flake Shellac that I make up 1 pound and 2 pounds cuts of, use the 1 pound cut as a sealer, and spots that need stiffening or support, and the 2 pound cut for finishing with a clear lacquer for wear and tear.

Generalfinishes makes a Wood Turners Finish or WTF that goes on like CA but it’s water based. Cures almost as fast but no gas off or super hot glove melting reaction. I just can’t run slow enough to get that good good finish with big items. Centrifugal force says nope!

It’s odd that it sands so easily though. I’ve noticed in the end grain that it develops some crystalline stuff not like sap though. Must be the silica.

I’ve carved a lot of red cedar over the decades and turned a few pieces. That pop/crack sound - ohh, yeah🙄. Deft works well as a finish. Best sprayed outdoors but it is so forgiving that you can rub away a drip with 0000 steel wool. I’ve done an end grain turning that polished up a treat using just Waterlox. About 5 coats with rub downs in between. No cracks. I was watching your video with the sound turned off and looked at the comments halfway through to see if you were using CA. Found out you were doing a voiceover and started over from the beginning. Great! New subscriber here.

Yup! The CA stopped those quiet ticks as the wood is starting to move. I do some pop up txts if it’s small info but found doing voice overs deliver much more information for anyone curious.

That’s something that it’s custom. It’s a treadmill motor and controller. Each treadmill setup is different. But essentially all you do is mount the treadmill motor and controller to your lathe in place of the factory motor. Depending on the type of belt that’s on the treadmill you might have to swap out the pulleys and step the motor down with the pulleys. The motor I have is a 2.5hp 120v 6000 rpm motor. The pulley on the motor is about 1.5” across and the pulley on the lathe is 4” across. So it’s a 4:1.5 ratio bringing my top speed to about 2000 rpm with the tach installed separately. I could do an explanatory video but it’s apples to oranges depending on the treadmill you use.

Dude that was great to watch. I recently glued my thumb to the bottom of an inside out ornament I turned as I was holding a little snowman in place. Took about 30 minutes or so to get it off, LOL. Anyway great vase/hollow form you made there. I've heard cedar called juniper also, maybe its different species, we call it cedar in my parts .

Hi, Raymond here. I have a Central Machinery lathe also. I'm just curious why you have the belt cover removed? Also, your motor, is it set back some? Just curious on some of the things you've done to yours, could be helpful in my set up. Thanks.

That’s not a factory setup. The factory motor would not have handled that block of cedar. Mine actually has a 2.5hp 120v treadmill motor on it, not the weak 3/4hp that came with it. Been meaning to build something to go over it but just haven’t yet

@@EppsCreations Cool, by the way, where is "down here"? I live in NC and we also refer to it as aromatic red cedar or eastern red cedar. I love working with cedar, build a lot of things from it. So far I have only turned a lamp but plan on more projects. I bolted my machine to the floor and put a heavy steel brace on the head end to help with the vibrations. Works pretty well. @@danolson6770 no, that’s lacquer. I shy away from the epoxy finish because it’s not perfectly smooth. You can see ripples in it and it will yellow over time.
