That really turned out beautifully. I turn a lot of Chinese elm. It looks very much like your Siberian elm. The brown hard wood and yellow sap wood. And it is as hard as stone. But that helps it cashing so well.

ThePapa1947 yep that would be neat, maybe a piece of pvc pipe can cut to the length and glue cap on bottom maybe paint the top rim of the pipe black that way wouldn’t see that white edge make a good water tight vase for it.

Hi Gary, I thought at first you were going to make on of those drinking canteens Mike put up the other day. But as usual you pull out the old switch-ah-roo and made this beautiful little weed pot(?) the dark rottenish wood on top s the clincher. It’s like life coming up out of decay. Thanks for sharing. I always struggle to see where this is going. I understand from your comment that you also determine on the fly how you are going to do something. But do you have a design in mind when you start? This has become beautiful. The vase, not the green branches.😄 Frank.

Thank you Frank...I try to have a basic idea where I am going but on something like this I allow things like the natural wood on the top to help me with the final shape. There are times that I have no idea what I will be turning so I watch for nature to lead the way. But there are times I know every step I will be taking such as the soccer ball I recently turned and the piece I have in my lathe right now. But those are piece that are easy to see the finished turning before it is done. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching and take care my friend, Gary

The scraper is 1.5 inches and I bought it here www.pennstateind.com/ I find it does a great job for the price. You will also need to grind it as a negative rake scraper if you decide. Gary
