Woodturning - Watertight and food safe canteen turned on multi axis without any jigs

In this woodturning video I show how to make a wooden flask or canteen that you can actually have liquids in. I use regular woodturning tools without any special jigs to turn on two axis. I really make the most out of the lathe chuck. It is food safe(with reservations) and water tight. I have not found many videos on youtube about how to do this so I wanted to share my take on it. Great fun woodworking project.

That was incredible! My mind was trying to work out how you were going to approach it so you had my complete attention throughout! What a great job and beautiful flask! I have a lathe here but have never touched it as for some reason it's felt a little too intimidating. You have me feeling inspired to give it a try, although I am very certain woodturning is much more difficult than it looks. G'day I hope you got I to turning if still deciding or struggling there maybe a turners group near you, or see if you can find a mentor, I'm a person with multiple severe life altering injuries and illnesses and using the phone and meeting people is scary as, I was able to ask a bloke and he said yes and is very understanding and after 3 sessions I learnt more than the 3 years on and off prior. I've also found a couple of awesome pros that through watching KZbin videos and they are extremely giving of there time to answer my questions and are happy to do so whenever I need some help. I follow a few groups on Facebook and post questions and help and have found some very helpful answers. I hope you have or do give it a go, it might seem scary yet it is quite safe as long as you don't rush take your time, learn from mistakes and make items that you can use at the end so you get a great achievement Cheers 🍻 Matt 👋👋👋🇦🇺🇦🇺🤠

I enjoyed seeing the carefully thought work flow on making the flask. This is what is so intriguing in wood turning. One aspect is to master the handling of the chisels. Another thing is figuring out how much can be done with rather simple tools, and what is the best workflow. Actually, the work flow was wasteful and unnecessary. Why glue together 3 blocks of wood, only to completely cut 2 of them away? Just start with the dark block, cut it hollow, then add the 2 new end blocks as he did. As an engineer with production training, this unnecessary workflow made the viewing experience less enjoyable for me. I like to see optimized workflows.

@@MaskedMarble well, as a DSc (Tech) in industrial engineering and management I consider the workflow well thought. Because his intention was to demonstrate how to do this with just the specific chuck and jaws. For what you described, a set of different fixtures are needed, and jigs built, this method shows how to get perfect fit without any extra tools. Feel free to make a video to demonstrate a more efficient way to do this end result. Material for jigs counts.

Lovely work, I like multiple axis turning too, you can come up with some great designs and some very unusual effects. Some time ago I turned a large mahogany egg but hollowed out the large end 90degrees to the egg axial shape before I made the egg shape itself. What I ended up with wes a simple looking egg shape that had a very odd center of gravity...its a fun build and something of a talking point for anyone that picks it up Love the flask thanks for sharing
