Beautiful wood! For wet wood turning, I have Abranet in 80, 100, 120 and 180. When it clogs up with wet fibers, you just bend it to clean it off and keep using it as the wood surface dries. Well worth the extra expense over conventional sanding products. Also great for removing wax or oil based surfaces that also clog up conventional products. Am looking forward to the segmented project next week. Hope your health keeps getting better!
@ThePapa1947Ай бұрын
Thanks Valerie that is a great tip. I bought some knock off disk but did not like them. Well they sent them by mistake and then sent the correct standard sanding disk. Might have to give the real ones a try but I do not turn green wood that often. I do like the idea of removing wax as well. Doing much better thank you!
@valeriehenschel1590Ай бұрын
@@ThePapa1947 I have tried at least three other brands of net style sanding sheets and disliked them compared to Abranet. Just wish Abranet came in 2 or 3 inch sanding disks. I buy the small rectangles and cut them into strips for hand held sanding, or hand cut the needed disks.

What an outstanding piece of wood, and well turned, Gary. I appreciated watching you make ways to get ahold of it after removing the tenon to finish it. The street I live on is Redbud Trail on one end and Red Bud Trail on the other end. Haha I have to admit that I haven't looked at the signs in years. I should see if they got evened up. Haha.. Another GREAT video. I keep picking up great ideas from your videos. I thought I'd share one. For applying spray finishes I adapted a BBQ rotisserie motor to a chuck adapter. This allows me to very slowly rotate the turned piece while applying spray. First a light tack coat; then after that coat is very tacky apply a very heavy final coat. Because the piece is slowly rotating the heavy coat doesn't run. This enables a glass-like finish if using a gloss spray finish.
@ThePapa1947Ай бұрын
Thank you David. I have seen the bbq method a number of times. My lathe will go down to 50 RPM and that seems to work pretty good. Listening to others speak of there work experiences with RB the color of the wood changes with the locality. Ours here in Va. dark like walnut with yellow strips running thru it. Its one drawback that I have experienced is splitting.

Just when you turn a redbud bowl, I got some Texas Redbud from a friend's land south of town. The wood is still really green and I will need to wait a while before I turn it. But now, after seeing you turn your redbud wood, I may try a green turning and dry out in a paper bag or cardboard box with wood shavings. However, the wood I have does not seem as colorful as the piece you turned. Nice wood turning, my friend! I like this one too, and your better half will need to make more room on the display shelves.

@ThePapa1947Ай бұрын
Thank you very much Mark. It is a beautiful wood and this was enough for me to really look forward to turning the big pieces. I used Baltic Birch plywood for that sign. The signs I made for outside I made from 2 inch clear Cedar. I made those probably 8 or 9 years ago. Thanks for watching, Gary

Hey Gary, just curious if you checked the moisture content before you started turning this piece? I’ve never tried to turn a “wet” piece. I’ve always waited until the moisture content was down below around 15% or so. BTW, beautiful piece! That Red Bud sure didn’t disappoint! Oh and the church sign was very nice too! Thanks for sharing!
@ThePapa1947Ай бұрын
Hi Michael, the moisture content was over 30% I do enjoy turning wet wood now and then. But be sure to treat the bed of your lathe before and after. I have a spray that I use on my bike chains which works pretty good. So does Johnson paste wax. Thanks for watching, Gary

Wow! Awesome wood. Good video. I'm pretty much new to turning, and I was wondering why nobody seems to remove tenons with a large Forstner bit in a drill press? I've done several that way and it seems a lot safer than doing it on the lathe. The spur on the bit drops right into the dimple on the tenon, and all you need is a big bit running at very slow speed and a light hand on the press to clean it right off. I also use a 3" Forstner bit chucked in the lathe to remove a core to the depth I want on the bowl. Saves a lot of fairly hazardous turning since this rookie has a tendency to stick the tool and send the piece bounding around the damn shop. Appreciate a response from you pros. Thx.
@ThePapa1947Ай бұрын
Thank you David I appreciate you watching and commenting. When we turn a natural edge bowl it will not sit flat on the drill press table so doing it the way we do it is quick and easy. I will drill out a small turning like a vase. But cutting the inside of a bowl can be lots of fun. If I was turning bowls to sell I would probably choose what ever makes it quick. Like drilling the middle out. Thanks for watching and have lots of fun turning. I sure do, Gary
@davidwright9688Ай бұрын
@@ThePapa1947 Thanks Gary. Natural edge makes sense of course. I stuck my tool today 3 times and flung a bowl at about a 1000 MPH across the shop each time...wound up tossing the bowl after I lost an edge. I wasn't having fun doing the inside on that one. I think I was trying to do too big a bowl on my lathe. Lesson learned. Either buy a bigger lathe or make smaller pieces. I used to be good at turning pens for craft shows. Bigger stuff is another ball game. Dave

HI Gary, I do the same with change. I toss it in a lane cedar box I have and when it gets heavy I take it to the bank and they sort it out. The Lane box is about3 inches square by 8 inches long. Maybe you remember the little cedar boxes.. Lane company went out of business years ago.Love your channel.

Papa. Sorry, I think you got so hung up on the grain that you missed the design by turning away all that light coloured wood which I think gave it such great contrast. It got so small with a rather boring elementary shape. You normally do such great work I’m surprised by this one. Please take (my take) on this piece with a grain of salt. I’m a faithful subscriber so don’t let me bother you, be reassured I’ll be watching your very next video. ❤
