Great video showing some of the tips on how to avoid being out of square/level. i like to use a combination square to support the track with the sliding ruler set at the proper distance from the front of the track which allows you to support the track at the same distance in the rear as the front and be able to screw in the rear bracket dead on. Acts like an adjustable jig that supports the track

Nice and methodical, well-lit and nicely edited. The only topic left out is the assumption that the floor and hence the cabinet are level. Not always so. Using a torpedo level for alignment does NOT always work. Concrete floors are not always level. Old wooden floors are not always level. Check the case for level before work begins. I tend to align by measurement and fit only to by-pass any problems.

I'm in a 34 year old house where all of the plastic brackets have broken and been repaired with various methods over the years. And they were badly installed in the first place so that some of the tracks sloped vertically and were out of line horizontally. I wound up removing all the old brackets and put a 4" wide strip of 3/4 plywood behind the tracks. The plywood is screwed to the cabinet sides and the tracks are screwed to the plywood which gives almost a perfect horizontal alignment. Some washers made the final horizontal adjustment. For the vertical alignment I cut notches in another piece of plywood and used that to support the tracks while they were being attached to the plywood. Because of old age and limited mobility this took about 6 hours to do but it's hopefully fixed forever now.

I like how you locate the ball bearing slide level with the bottom of the drawer. HOWEVER, when you go to attach the slide inside the cabinet, you don't say how high or low this slide should be positioned so that it engages with the drawer slide and allows the drawer to fit right into the cabinet opening. If that inside slide is off by even 1/4" it won't fit correctly into the cabinet opening. Also, I was hoping you would show how to install the ball bearing slide on a frameless cabinet.

This seems like a good method, until I think about having to level every cabinet in my shop before installing slides. If you are going to use a level on a slide and have it properly installed your cabinet needs be level first. This should shown in the video, and explained before a slide is installed in the video. The jig starts to look much more attractive when you have a dozen cabinets to level before using the torpedo level. Once the cabinet is installed this method would work fine, because in most cases a level slide will work best in a stationary cabinet, level or not. The jig method suffers from the opposite, but less likely problem. If the cabinet is already installed and the cabinet is tilted forward or backwards from level the drawer will slide on its own. This can happen during retrofits where new slides are being used and the old house had settled. Of course you showed a unfinished cabinet in a shop, so I'll assume you were discussing new.

Thanks for putting this very informative video out there. I think the ball bearing sliders are the way to go in many applications if not most, for both costs & long term function. I have an old kitchen floor cabinet from the 50's very similar to your cabinet dimension shown here that I have converted to a mobile floor cabinet used with a miter saw & doubles as a outfeed table for my table saw as well. My old cabinet has the (1) original pull out drawer on wooden slides & naturally it requires wiggling back & forth & side to side to pull it out. With a little imagination I will convert it to a ball bearing slider arrangement, similar to what you have demonstrated in this thoughtful video. No two situations are rarely identical, but you have clearly demonstrated (3) possible scenarios with some variables to correctly install drawer slides. Thank you, Bill Farr... :-)

Great video with useful tips. Question...any idea why many installation instructions for ball bearing slides require 1/16 to 1/8 inch setback from the face Frame? You made yours flush and I agree with that but yet many instructions require a setback. Thank you
@thor20155 жыл бұрын
I do not know this to be fact but wondered the same thing. The only reason I can see for doing this is to make sure if the mounting hole drilled into the wood is off center and the screw pulls the slider forward that the slider won’t be pulled over the edge of the cabinet/face frame.
@Trainman04015 жыл бұрын
That’s a good reason and makes sense. I intend to be careful make mine even with the frame. Thanks for the response.
@thor20155 жыл бұрын
One other thing to add- I just picked up a set of slides where the front mounting hole is drilled really close to the front of the rail. When the edge of the rail is set back 1/8”, the pilot hole is directly centered in the 3/4” thick face frame. I imagine putting the rail flush with the face frame would risk splitting the wood. I recommend that if you do decide to go against manufacturer recommendations that you test the alternate mounting on some scrap wood.
@boilerman19914 жыл бұрын
Setback allows for the drawer face to have constant pull against the face frame when closed.
