I went through many other videos and not one of them took the time to show exactly how to release the drawer piece from the main slide. You took the time zoomed in and showed me exactly what to do! I've been a licensed remodeling/additions contractor for almost 40 years. However, when I had to repair/replace a set of glides, on MY OWN DESK, in my office, I realized I had some questions about rail alignment (for the cabinet) and rail placement (for the drawer). I bought some new "full retraction" drawer glides, and the instructions were so basic, they were useless. I watched 8-10 videos here, on You Tube, and found your's to be the most informative. I'm in the business of "explaining" things, to homeowners AND my employees, and it was nice that you not only demonstrated HOW to install, but WHY to do it, in a particular way. Thanks !!

Awesome video! I recently had a drawer slide fail on a deep, heavy kitchen drawer with 22" full-extension slides. I am no carpenter, and was puzzled by how to install the glides on the cabinet itself, to get even gaps all around the drawer face, consistent with the rest of the cabinets. Richelieu's instructions were useless to me, but I watched your video twice, and the job came out perfectly. I learned with inches and fractions, but switched to primarily metric 20 years ago, when my job demanded accurate measurements. Thank you Bent's!

I came here just to learn how to install couple slides for a top drawer. Walked away with that and learned about a special tool (Tiny-T). Can't believe in my 50+ years I've never even seen this tool anywhere. Or maybe I wasn't paying attention, and I use to work in a lot of machinery & build throughout time. No more fighting with combination squares and T-squares to drag a precise line. Not to mention the Tape measure in the links with clear marking that shows 1/8, 16ths etc WITH metric too. Thanks

@@bentswoodworking - Agreed, I did purchase one even though some people complained about it's flimsiness. However I find that as a good quality to have. Plus it offer's other qualities of drawing a near perfect Circle, up to 6 inches diameter. Which has been a challenge in the past - no more looking for round objects to trace around. Now the quest for the perfect 0.5mm lead that Doesn't break. Or possibly me being more careful in my efforts of build ;-)

In the UK, we changed to metric years ago. There were many who didn't like it but it makes so much sense. I do understand however why some don't want it. I'm English but live in Germany. I am so interested in Rockler stuff, however most of it is imperial if not all of it. Also a lot of the US KZbin channels I follow (Jay Bates for example and you Jason) only offer their build plans in imperial. All those fractions of an inch are confusing whereas working with millimeters is easy. Love your stuff Jason 🤘

When I started woodworking I made more errors with the imperial system. I had issues with fractions and reading the tape measure. Metrics are sooo much easier to work with. Add, subtract, multiply, divide, and reading the tape measure got easier. Just use whole numbers, and call out whole numbers, millimeters is understood. I learned from a European, nobody calls out decimeters or centimeters, they just say 1100 minus 900 = 200. BAM you're done. Very accurate and easy.

If you've used the imperial system for 55 years then its prime, and math is all done in my head faster than other guys can write it out or pull out the calculator. So, long story short. Use what your comfortable with and let's not try to convert everyone else to your way and just enjoy building stuff

Gary E. I grew up in Europe with Metric. I got used to imperial in Architecture (my profession) but for woodworking I switched back to metric. I my original home country metric is used like that: Architects: 2.54 means 2meters 54 centimeters. Under one meter you just write 54 for 54 centimeters Wood working: Joiners and cabinetmakers work in centimeters so for them it is 254 means 254 centimeters, When the need fractions of a centimeter (millimeter ) it is written 254.6. And spoken you just would say 255 6 . Steel workers think in millimeter. So for them the above measurement would be 2546 meaning 2546 mm. Hopefully not too confusing ..... :)

Love your videos and your approach! I've been using K&V slides and the cabinet member installs 2 mm in from the front of the cabinet (frameless), which aligns it perfectly with Euro-style/System32 cabinets. And then the drawer member installs 3 mm back from the front. The net effect then is that your drawer sits about 1mm proud of the cabinet, which is perfect for an overlay drawer front. I didn't realize how important this was when I was doing inset drawers. But with overlays, you need that extra 1 mm for the drawer to have enough travel to fully slide in and engage the detent that holds it shut. Otherwise the drawer front blocks it from sliding in fully. For an inset drawer I had better results with the drawer member installing closer to flush. This is all well-documented in the Knape & Vogt install sheet ... which I only glossed over and then couldn't figure out why my drawers wouldn't push in far enough to engage the detent. Need that 1 mm sitting proud!

One thing I'd like to add here for fine-tuning. While plywood is supposed to be flat and straight, I'm amazed just how many times a cabinet side will bow. With full extension drawer slides, this can create a real nightmare as the fit is pretty exacting. For a simple 16th of an inch a washer behind your mounting screw can really help to fine-tune the slides so they don't bind. If the cabinet is an eighth of an inch off (not that uncommon) when plywood bows, I found putting a stretcher bar in the center of the cabinet with some pocket holes helps to pull the sides in. If the bow is inward, the stretcher bar just pushes it out. Usually you can hide it underneath the bottom of the drawer. This brings up the next point of making your drawer a bit smaller in height than the drawer front. All this assuming a cabinet without a face frame, and side mounted slides as shown in the video.

Here in the UK I have always been taught the metric system and I am 40. I am very familiar with imperial measurements but for me its night and day, metric is so much easier to work with and calculate.

Brand new to wood working, doing some simple DIY and repair type stuff with basic hand tools. That tiny square thing is amazing, I immediately bought one. Also, I laughed when you started talking about metric, for the simple fact that I quickly realized on day 1 of my first project all those stupid fractions and other crap is just too sloppy and hard to work with. Then again, I've always preferred metric, so it was an obvious step for me.

Great explanation, I also like the use of mm - Im attesting a project first time! How do you determine your draw sizes, and work out where the draw slides go? for example larger draw at the bottom x2 smaller draw above ?

It may be worth a mention that the use of elongated holes are best advised for the less confident BUT ONLY until you are happy with the smoothness of runners and accuracy of fit THEN also employ the circular holes to “LOCK” the rails in position, if you don’t then they will move esp if you have a missus that rams it full. Another good idea to fit the drawer rails is fit the whole three sections of rails in the cupboard as excellently show on the vid then put a 3mm or so spacer (for clearance) under the drawer to be fitted - position drawer then eeek out drawer and rail (each side) and as soon as a screw hole shows pop a screw in each side then pull out some more and repeat (supporting front of drawer so it won’t sag)......hopefully that will give you a well aligned rail and free flowing.
