The store that you picture at the start of this video was Chunn's General Store, owned and operated by my grandfather, William Lewis Chunn since the mid 1930's. He had moved his business from the gutted building downtown that you show later in the video. It was kept in the family and run by his youngest son, Randolph Chunn, until the mid 1990's. At one time, there were approximately 25 "Chunn's" in Woodbury. Randolph died in 2006 and was the last Chunn remaining in the area. I don't ever remember the building being called a jail. The "pink" building you mention just before the gutted building downtown, was A clothing store operated by Hiney Carroll, in direct competition with the Chunn's - although Carrol's store was more upscale while Chunn's was more for the average working person. The building directly across the street from Carrol's on the corner, was the bank building. By the way: Woodbury, Georgia only has one "R". And...it's pronounced "Woodberry" by all the people there. The covered bridge was private property the last time I saw it, so seeing a park setting was really great. That area around the bridge was called Flat Shoals and is on the Flint River. We used to go there swimming and wading when I was a kid. That was always special on a hot summer day.

Jay, thank you so much for watching our video and giving us all this history of the town. We have a good friend of ours that used to be an IRS agent and he is who told us that building used to be a jail🤷🏻‍♀️

@@Crazytraveladdicts I failed to say "Thank You!" in my earlier comments, and I wanted to get that oversite corrected first. Well, maybe he knows something I don't. I know that the building existed before Mr. Will Chunn bought it in the 30's, moving one block South from the gutted building on the corner that you highlighted in another video. What it was before that, I don't have a clue. I know that they did not pull out any iron bars to get ready to move in. It was a large building for its time and for the town, and I find it very strange that Lil-ole-Woodbury would need such a huge space for incarceration. It's always been a dirt-poor area that never had an extra dime to spend frivolously. The only real industry in the area during the 1950's was the pepper plant located on the railroad tracks Southwest of the store. Local farmers grew lots of red bell pepper and brought their product to the plant where it was turned into Pimento Pepper, canned and shipped out to the world. In the 1980's drugs and gangs pretty much took over the town, and maybe that's where the money came from, to put on more police officers. By the 1950's, the "jail" was located around the corner to the left of the mural you viewed and commented on. I think it must have been mostly a holding area/drunk tank because it was very small and Merriweather was a "dry county." I would bet that it still is! Any prisoners would have had to be transported to Greenville, the County Seat, and, I was told, the proper jail there is located under the court house in the square that you highlighted in the video about Greenville. I really don't know if it is in the basement, or not. In the same area as the Police Station in Woodbury was a welding/metal working/machine shop owned by Mr. Durand. I used to play with his son, Danny, when my family was in town. It's strange to think of him being an old man, just like me! I have a cousin that now lives in Greenville, and her maiden name was Chunn. She is the daughter of Mr. Will's oldest son, William L, Chunn Jr, who was known as "Will L." He worked in both stores, off and on, all his life. She grew up in Woodbury and I will forward this to her, and maybe she will take the time to shed some light on the town that I just don't know. Thanks! Again! J

Enjoyed the video. A trip down memory lane. In the early 1960's, after graduating from medical school, my father was placed in Woodbury by the State of Georgia. We lived there up until the early 1970's. He was one of the founding members of Flint River Academy. I remember Chunn's very well. Randolph's son Lawrence was my age.

I've worked in this town for almost 18 years. I live 15 minutes down the road in Manchester. I've been pulled over twice in this county in 18 years. But yes there are too many cops with too little to do in this county and in these little towns, especially Greenville. Edit: interesting fact, Imlac was named by the railroad, I'm not sure what year. It's an acronym that stands for In the Middle of a Line between Atlanta and Columbus. And the house you passed on covered bridge road where the orange truck was backing out the driveway is a friend of mine! If you ever come back this way you should ride through the cove. It's a ring of mountains believed by some at UGA to possibly be an impact crater. The Flint River cuts through one side of it. In the cove there is also a pair of huge radio telescopes that have been utilized by scientists from around the world. My friend worked there with people from the SETI Institute years ago. Beautiful area.

Great video!! I see you guys are incorporating new things in your videos like stats on the town, etc. Kudos to you. Another interesting thing to do would be to say the day and time. Sometimes the town looks so deserted and I wonder what day and time it is. Also it tells a bit about the energy of the place. Probably sounds a bit quirky right? lol. Well anyway I’m enjoying your adventures very much and that bridge was fascinating!!! I don’t know if I would have gone across. I was glad to see those people just in y’all had a ‘mishap’ LOL. Glad you made it over. Imagine all the history that passed that way, wow! Keep up the great work!

Another fact about Woodbury. In the 80s it was known as "Little Miami". It was the initial cocaine hub coming from Miami. It would go to Woodbury to be distributed out from there to all over the southeast and the rest of the country. There were huge busts in the late 80s that put a damper on the whole thing. It's a crazy little town!

The speed limits in Woodbury are the reason why you saw so many police. They are very strict about them!
@emmabarrow2000

You should be careful in tiny towns with a lot of cops. Could be a speed trap. Fines are set at what they want. They have to pay for those cars. You could leave with a payment plan to pay up. Come to a full stop and don't speed even one mile an hour. If you don't see a tax base to support the cars and cop's pay look out. There was a speed trap just 20 miles from mine and the state of Georgia prosecuted them. But the chief of police just moved to a different town.

I’m from Franklin, Ga, but my grandparents live in Woodbury, so I’ve been around there a lot of my life, and it is definitely a cool little town, but the police presence is quite baffling. Surprisingly, I never even see that many cops when I am around Woodbury though, so I guess y’all got unlucky😳.

Thank you for watching our video! We are driving an SUV with all terrain tires. We do alot of traveling to the mountains so the all terrain tires come in handy but unfortunately they are a little loud. We will try to start talking a little louder or figure out a way to edit out the noise. 😊😊
