The REED bearing Depth adjuster (Howard adjuster) can take a premium plane and make it feel that much better! this is an adjuster that is commonly found on Lienealson block planes and Record shoulder planes. the problem with the original is the adjuster can cause lateral movement and often has a good bit of slop. if you use a bearing it removes the slop and the lateral movement.

Nice stuff, thanks. Lie Nielsen should be ashamed that you have to buy an after market part to get the plane to perform to the point of putting a smile on your face as a happy customer. They make very high end products and that is what they are in business to do.

I was looking endlessly for something like this. I’ve an 073 and a 60 1/2 that have the same annoying issue. It takes a bit to adjust the lateral to then advance de iron and lose the adjustment. This is it, I just got myself 2 of these depth adjusters!!!! Thanks James!!

Make sure to keep your blades sharpened to a perfect square. If you're a hand sharpener, that might be a pain. The press fit style means the blade will be fixed in place perpendicular to the adjuster screw, with no ability to adjust laterally. Start squaring up those irons during shipping, and enjoy your new toy. :) I might snag one, too.

@@MortimerSugarloaf Right on! I use a honing guide, it suits my obsessive nature of “millimetric” perfection, but I didn’t thought that much of the iron squareness affecting the lateral, it makes sense. Thank you Collin!

Update: I bought two and they arrived today, one for my No° 60-1/2R and one for my No° 97. I thought there was an outside chance it would work with my No° 102, but no bueno; so good thing I didn’t buy three. Makes backlash nearly nonexistent for both the 60-1/2R and 97👍. You’ll still need to back off & tension the cap on the 60-1/2 as you do normally (a very important task given it’s a rabbeting plane and they are easy to ruin if mistreated) but movement is smoother and the No° 97 adjusts like butter. If Reed were to make one for the No° 102 however, I think there’s an even larger market for them as there are far more of them ‘In the wild‘ than there are 60-1/2’s or 97’s. I’m glad I made the purchase and hope there’ll be one made for the No° 102 (often referred to as an apron plane, but is really just a perfect sized low angle block plane in bronze; not as versatile I guess as the 60-1/2R, but I’d take it over a regular 60-1/2 any day and use it more than even my Veritas DX-60)❤

@@reedplanes728 ❤️ The notch is the same and I think you could possibly get away with the same barrel/knurling size; though it is smaller than the current offering. Otherwise, I think if the post threads were the same, I’d buy a third one to use on it until a smaller offering made for it appeared. The only small L-N Tools I use are the 60-1/2R, 97, and 102; the Veritas DX-60 is just so much better than the standard L-N No° 60-1/2, so it’s the odd ball of the block planes in my chest. I haven’t tried your frog adjustment plates yet, but I do have an old Stanley No° 3 that I use on occasion that I may give it a whirl with. I’ve already got a second frog in 50° for my L-N No° 4 and really think I’d probably leave that Stanley No° 3 set up in that higher angle permanently if I had it. So maybe with my January ‘allowance’ 🤣. As for the support, often the most powerful vote we have is with our dollar and I’m all for any person who’s willing to take the risks and expend the energies to do their own thing. As an example, my Hovarter Vises are still one of the best purchases I’ve ever made (I had them before James did, so maybe he copied me 🧐🤪). Have a great one brother!

This bearing depth adjuster fits fine on my #62 LA Jack without any modification. However, both my 60-1/2 and 60-1/2 R required that I open up the slot in the blade for the bearing to fit. The one problem I've found is that the knurled knob of this new adjuster is bigger in diameter than the original and scrapes the body of my 60-1/2 when advancing the blade. Doesn't have that issue with the 60-1/2 R.

I have one of the L-N rabbeting block planes - lightly used - I'd say I've had it for at least 5 years. And I've ordered one of the Depth Adjusters. Mine does NOT rattle like yours - it's nice and tight (did you try tightening the large adjuster in the cap iron?). I don't know if this is luck-of-the-draw, or yours is older/newer than mine and L-N tweaked the design or maybe its just normal wear and tear. I have noticed that changing the depth screw does skew the iron a bit (so the new adjuster is well worth it). I can't fathom how L-N would miss skewing the iron, or rattling as the plane gets broken in, this just so obvious. First time I've ever any issue at all about L-N's quality over time. And I've long wished for a fence on this plane (it would consolidate about 3 planes in my "grab and go-kit" ) - I notice Henry Eckert sells just that. Oh - this is going to cost me!!!! EDIT: I'd give them a call (they are always helpful).

Ooh, I hate the adjuster on my LN 7 1/2. Same crappy adjuster as your block plane. Are all the slots on the LN planes the same width? This would be a nice addition to take that plane all the way. THANK YOU and Henry Eckhart tools. Australia has politicians. Our politicians have decided we should be a dumb country selling raw materials overseas. We punch well above our weight in inventions and then sell them to US, UK or anyone to develop because if it can't be grown or dug up goodbye. In order to compete against third world countries we have to keep the Aussie dollar low against the US dollar. If you think Veritas and Lie Nielsen are expensive in the US try paying close to double. Their wooden planes are not cheap even in Australia from time to time second hand planes come on the market but, since I have no experience using wooden planes I am reluctant to punt that much money on a tool I may not be able to use to its full potential. Once upon a time, before Reagan and Free Trade, Australia had The Great Tariff Wall and we made some really good quality metal body planes and perversely because we were a small market it wasn't worth trading quality for very marginal increase it profits. So you can find a Pope, Falcon Pope or a Turner post WW2 made the same year as an US Stanley and the Australian plane is better. The little slop is actually necessary as it allows lateral adjustment especially for a rabbet block plane unless one can sharpen exactly 90° to the sides of the blade all the time. However if the slot in the blade is shaped like a Preston 1391 spokeshave that uses a thumb press lateral adjuster then maybe I would agree

There's a reason the L-N adjuster is made of steel and is a little sloppy. You'll find that the brass one is going to wear down quickly since it is a press-fit, esp. if you keep the knuckle cap tight. A little machine oil should help slow the wear tho'.
@WoodByWrightHowTo

The bearing that actually fits into the slot is steel. It doesn't spin in the slot it's a bearing. The section that is press fit stays in that spot of the iron. So there's far less wear on this than there would be in the original one.
