Simple, traditional or elegant pinch rods can take many forms, but in any form they make us better woodworkers. Thanks for showcasing my ideas.

We used to make temporary pinch rods from two strips of wood and two rubber bands.

If the locking mechanism of the tape measure is good you should be able to put another end hook on the back of the tape measure and use it like a regular pinch rod.

Very nice. My pinch rods (I used to call them width sticks) are currently just two pieces of wood about 3/4 " wide, 1/8 inch thick and several pairs with different lengths (8" and 16"). And they are held together with binder clips (found in office supply sections of stores). But I am going to use a scrap of 1" square steel tubing, cut off two small pieces, and drill and tap where needed to make some nicer pinch rods.

Tape measure rod end can also be completely conical so you can rotate the tape 90 degrees to take a more accurate reading.

Great Video James! I love the tape measurer mod. That is so handy. I converted a pair of antique trammel points to be pinch rods. Just basically shaped the trammel bar into two pinch rods. Works great. Now I have one tool that does two jobs. Keep up the awesome content James :)

As a woodworker, for safety shoes do you wear wooden-toed clogs instead of steel toed shoes?
@WoodByWrightHowTo2 жыл бұрын
I mostly wear the wooden shoes for comfort. When you carve them to fit your foot exactly. They are incredibly comfortable. But they also slip on and off easily which makes it very easily when coming and going from the shop. The fact that they're protective is nice though not really necessary in a hand tool shop.

I always chamfer before tapping even if it's not required. It is easier to start and it's stronger. decreases the shear point and increases the radius of the clamp area.

A simple way to check diagonals is to use ticker tape. For the younger generation many, many years ago stock market information was transmitted by wire and was received by a machine in remote locations. The stock information was then printed onto a paper tape. The paper tape was called a ticker tape. I assume "ticker" comes from the noise the machine made when it printed the tape Ticker tape is about 1" wide and comes in a roll about 150' long. I learned to check diagonals using ticker tape in my first naval architecture class 50 years ago. When designing ships and boats you start by drawing a set of grids laying out the length, beam and depth of the hull. The grid has to be accurate so when the lines of the ship are complete they will be fair. To check the grid for accuracy you would use ticker tape. You marked both ends of a diagonal and checked the corresponding diagonal to see if it was square. Ticker tape is still available online for about $11.00/roll. It is easy to use and can be trashed and replaced in seconds. Today, drawing lines for ships is done on computers. The use of ticker tape for measuring diagonals has becoming a lost art. However, it is still a quick easy method and requires only the tape and a pencil.

Lee Valley makes a magnetic clip for tape measure similar to this.

Thanks for mentioning that one, it looks like a good solution, but it is not for me. I would take it off and put it away. It would then be weeks before I found it again! I can find the dedicated tape easier. Most times with in a day or so.....................

The pinch rods are very nice looking. However, the best sets I have was from Roy underhill Woodwrights workshop episode using a half copper coupling squeezed in a vice and hammered square, drill a hole then solder a brass nut to the copper and make a knob or use a bolt. For $20 you could make a dozen of them in an afternoon with a little practice. I think Roy called them squeegee sticks if I remember correctly, for me this has worked out better and far cheaper.
@billstanley5317 Жыл бұрын
He called them pinch sticks but used them with squeezee blocks as cauls for dovetail joints.

Disappointed that they can't complete the kit for those of us who really don't want to work metal or use power tools. I kind of just want to do woodworking. Seems like they could have easily completed the hardware for the kit so I can just assemble it after I worked the wood...
@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
if you want a kit with all the work done then why not just buy the finished tool. sorry I am having a hard time seeing the problem here. Jeff could sell them finished, but no one would pay the price required for that time and involvement.

Another half ass "kit" that doesn't actually work for the task without serious modification...
