I customised my kick up casters to make them more user friendly with magnets in the legs to catch the flaps in the up position and hex head screws into the middle of the mounting plate to stop the caster dropping too low and getting caught under itself. This resolved 2 of the 3 main flaws. However the casters you've found seem to have solved all 3 issues in one go. Well done for finding them
@martinfridrich5281Ай бұрын
What a great find, wish this video was out a couple of weeks ago… I literally went through the exact same situation with the exact same casters… I found them great at first and then the more I had to move my workbench, the more I got annoyed by lifting each leg up individually. I think I might upgrade to these new ones, too! Thanks again!

That's a cool find, and far nicer to use than the fold down style by the look of it. I too didn't like the idea of a lever sticking out getting in the way, so I came up with an different alternative. My solution was a 3d printed spiral cam assembly that pushes a foot down, and lifts that corner off the caster. Mine work pretty well, with fewer downsides than the lever style, but the ones you found look way more convenient.

Oh yes putting casters on something that you may or may not have to move around a lot whether it be a work bench or a large thing you use for storage as a fantastic idea. My fiance had this big old cheap dresser that she used for storing a lot of her crafting stuff that she had to keep moving out of her patio into our house when bad storms were coming so she had the brilliant idea to put casters on it so we did that and it's awesome
@michaelschumacher-v3mАй бұрын
I found these casters about 2 weeks ago, and I'm getting ready to build a workbench. I'm thinking about incorporating a linear actuator on each end, between the casters with a battery and a simple up down switch, so I don't have to lift the bench myself. I'm getting older, and the bench is gonna be heavy! Glad you found these also, and shared. I think they are going to be in a lot of people's Christmas Wish List!

I've been using the R7s for over a year and love them. I have them on my workbench and getting ready to add a set to my new assembly table build. There is a small downside though. I tried putting some on my planer cart and on my jointer cart but because they are not spread very far apart, and tend to get offset, one wheel in the extended position and one in the retracted position on the same side. This causes you to have to prop up the tool and manually reset them to the same position.

I have the Rocker version on my bench and they don't seem to be as bad as yours - perhaps my bench weighs less. But, they are still a PITA and these new casters.....brilliant! So glad you found these. I found that the fasteners are the weak link - with that long moment arm the lower screws want to pull out (for legs.....) so I might add a brace above the caster to help with the load.
@WoodByWrightHowToАй бұрын
another point a few people have brought up is if you put them on the inside under the stretcher you can support them with a block between he stretcher and top of the caster.
@ronboe6325Ай бұрын

Very cool! I loved the initial pen clicking. By the third click I had gotten it too. :) For your old casters, I have a strip of wood connected to the two levers, so no crawling under the bench. It's still a bit awkward, and nowhere near as cool as your new ones. Thx!
@UnownerdeadАй бұрын
Those look like they work well, and I've definitely experienced the drawbacks you mentioned with my casters as well. That said, one thing I do like about the lever casters is there are mounting plates at a fraction of the price of the caster. You can get away with just those and a single set of casters, which works well if you have multiple benches/tables that you move infrequently. Hopefully these casters get such an option too someday!

@michaelkelley6905Ай бұрын
I fitted my Roubo bench with the same casters as your first set, but added a piece of square tubing to connect to two caster levers on each end, allowing engaging both casters with one foot on either end. They’re ok, but a bit fiddly even so. I watched Pedulla Studio Roubo bench build and he used two scissor lifts under the bottom shelf, using a crank to lift and lower the bench. My next bench is going to be super heavy (just the timbers for the top will weigh 450#, without vises). I bought the scissor lifts already and will be installing under the bottom shelf similarly to the Pedulla Roubo. I love these casters you showed, they are a much better solution than the lever type. The scissor lift ones are rated for 1100 pounds each and are super smooth under weight.

Wish my former cow shed turned workshop didn't have the 1" incline to it. Ive slowly been replacing my workshop casters with the ratcheting style combination casters/ adjustable levelling feet. I've also been grinding the floor down closer to level between projects as well so maybe they're an option one day. For the right person and set up that's pretty slick.
@samuelmellars7855Ай бұрын
If it's a concrete slab floor, re-levelling is surprisingly easy. Depending on size, it may not be cost effective though
@kurttalertАй бұрын
Ordered two sets, one of each size. Shocked at how affordable these are, given that they’re- to my eye, anyway- significantly more complicated than the simple lever system of the old casters. I would have expected these to be minimum $125 and $175 for the two sizes. Stoked. I hate that old style caster. Can’t wait to take them off.

I mounted my lever types sideways and a bit further in, to get them out of the way. For these clickers, if the cross member was thinner, or higher up, or inset more, you could put them on the inside of the legs.

As some one who did residential concrete work for years, and was considered too dang fussy to do concrete work, you have to mark out where it was on the floor to make sure the feet sit dead level so you don't end up with torque or an unlevel top. Garage slabs are the worst since they slope. We run into this a lot as we try to move our lathes around....
@WoodByWrightHowToАй бұрын
Right on. I have marks on my floor where it sits

No, no, no. It is supposed to go "Wright on!"..... There are many variations of "mobility kits for wood lathes. Some are good, others are junk. I guess those click ones work. My big lathes are about 800 pounds each, and lifting them up ain't easy any more.

The casters look great, the flip casters are not ideal on my Roubo bench but being removeable is a plus. I have everything in both my power tool shop in the garage and in the bench room in the basement on wheels. The one thing that isn't is my copy of Norm's tool hutch, not for lack of trying, I bent the heavy duty flip casters I tried on it. Maybe it is time to reimagine a power hand tool storage solution. The flat work surface of the hutch is more of a catchall ,I will get to that tomorrow, than work surface

For those looking for a way to lift the end of a heavy bench, look up an old movers tool called a j-bar. You can make your own completely out of wood, just use a wooden semi-circle forming the bottom of the "j", Its just a lever. Back in the day, we moved crates weighing over 1000lb with a commercial j-bar
@kperellieАй бұрын
Back in the 1970s I worked for a company that refurbished and sold grocery store open and closed refrigerators and freezers. One of my duties during that time was when the A&P grocery store chain started going out of business, and we traveled all over New England removing those refrigerators. Those J Bars were essential. We'd lift one end, place the fridge on a dolly, lift the other end, place another dolly underneath, and roll them onto the lift gate and into the back of an old International. These J Bars were made of Oak, with two steel wheels and a steel tang at the end.
@mgreene888Ай бұрын
@@kperellie Grew up with A&P; my mother shopped there as a preference - Anne Page was the store brand :) You could drag a crate that was too heavy to push with a j-bar just because of the friction reduction.
