Woodcutting and Cable Skidding before the snow

It's crunch time! Skidding a new trail and trying to get the last marked trees out before the snow. Fast is better than slow right now, so once again I find myself the observer/narrator. I really do learn a lot by watching others work, and I hope you do too!

Visiting my local chain saw store, i saw something I've never seen before. It was for sale ($220 US) and designed for skidding trees out of the woods. A 16 inch triangular yellow high-density polycarbonate piece. Think of a pyramid with very rounded edges and hollow inside. It slips over the end of a tree and slides along the ground stopping the tree from digging into the ground. Ever use anything like that? You contribute... No doubt. Fairbanks Alaska where its -10F (yep that's below zero) 3 hours of sunlight and I'm out in the woods cutting standing deadwood to help y neighbor GREAT video.. More please.

Yes, this „cone“ is very usefull if you use smaller winches ( like Power Winch, Lewis, Docma or Eder). We use them also here in Europe, I acutally own one myself. If you have a skidder with strong winches and break the sharp edges of the log in pull direction, these things are not necessary as the use is time consuming and they are bulky to carry. The above named small winches are even with a skidder usefull, if steel ropes must be pulled upwards….

Best advice I can give would be to have 3-4 extra batteries inside your pocket with a pocket hand warmer to keep them warm

Great video you are a+1 all day because we know that you could have done all this by your self. Being the kind thoughtful person you are you put the spotlight on your fellow crew member and allow him to show off his skills at heavy equipment operating and tree felling with cable winching thrown in. Then too the fashion show of the new jackets. Keep it up. 👍🏻

Hi Sarah! I recently discovered your videos and i immediately subscribed. I'm very impressed with both your chainsaw ability and even your knot tying. While I've never used a chainsaw before, I'm handy with a tablesaw. The former scares me, as if it's simply a hungry machine that wants to take a bite out of you. Good for you to wear your PPE.

Hello Sarah. Nice video, reminds me of when I was falling trees and driving a cable skidder etc. I was also involved in training bushmen working in New Zealand's Forest industry. I would like to offer a couple observations about what I observed from a safety point of view. 1) the guy falling does a nice job from what I can see, good cuts and wedging, however, he should look up more often when hitting the wedges as things can and do get dislodged and fall down. Hit the wedge look up and repeat. Yes its longer, however, you might see the branch coming down before it gets you. 2) changing the choker opposition to spin the log is a good trick, however you could cut an angle on the stump or the butt of the log to help the log slide past so it doesn't get stuck which leads onto point 3. 3) (around the 25min mark) when bringing the drag into the skidder, the skidder should not be side onto the drag. You can tip a skidder over easy doing it that way. The arch of the skidder should point towards the drag, even if you have to position the skidder on full lock. I almost rolled the skidder first day on the job by not pointing the arch towards the drag. Its also makes it easier the fleet the rope onto the drum without it crossing over and crushing the rope underneath. Its written for New Zealand Forestry so some terms will be different, however the knowledge, skills and safety tips apply still apply. Search for BPG or Best Practice Guides if you are interested.
