I love going to wooden boat festivals. They have such a different vibe than the big boat manufacturer shows. They have more of a celebration vibe than a sales vibe. I wish I could make it to either of the festivals that you'll be attending, but the stars didn't align to make it happen. I hope they go well for you!

Hi Peter, I’m sure the diesel fuel filter will work fine and be safe since it’s not in the engine compartment. I’d considered doing the same for the priming feature, but ultimately opted to side with caution. I do believe they’re approved for use with outboard engine setups too. Poem is really looking great. Hi Peter. I realise you know this but a checklist just incase. Regarding the wiring around the engine bay.. as sparks are an issue.. putting cable in rubber tubing and gaiters can help. New HT leads and check the little threaded thing's on top of the sparkplugs are tight, better is the type of HT leads that use the sparkplug connection direct to the threaded bit on the sparkplugs, clean coil insulation area and then check for electrical tracking when it's dark... thankfully it looks like the electrics are not near the carburettor. Do you have a metal tray with a gauze (ideally with a bilge float switch in it connected to an alarm) below the carburettor also something similar below the filter and pump. Have you cleaned out the float bowl and while you're at it take out the needle valve and flush it to make sure no bits are in there also there is good flow. If I saw correctly.. it looks like the pan air filter is too small, have you cleaned it.. also check for anything in the carburettor and flooding when pump is on. What stops the fuel pump from over pressuring the carburettor.. is there a return line or pressure return or regulator. Automatic bilge pumps with alarm. Regards from Bella 🐈 & Mark.

Yeah petrol not the best hence the blowers as we all know petrol fumes tend to live in the Bilge. 😮 you think your wiring was bad mine looks like the London underground 😅. I know what you mean about gas engines, but a gas engine will be quieter than a diesel. Also, you can upgrade the distributor/coil for the engine with an H.E.I. ignition , readily available in wrecking yards, gm vehicles 1975-up they are much simpler and very reliable plus a little content for you to swap it out!

Peter, I am amazed at how much you have accomplished on MV Poem! She is looking great! That old straight six fired right up and sounded wonderful. I know that you plan on changing her to diesel in the future, but the durability of those straight six GM’s are incredible. She sure sounds like she has some life left in her. If I recall though, that the transmission is a bit tired. Hopefully she will get you through the festival and then some. Keep up the amazing videos, and I am glad that you brought the beer of the week back! Cheers!

Because of the location of the pump/filter, IF you elect to install a gas sniffer, you will want detectors at both the pump/filter location as well as the engine bay. Time to go with diesel!

Are you going to change the mechanical fuel pump. You should use a 1994 ford probe 2.0l automatic fuel filter before the fuel pump inlet. If it uses 5/16 fuel hose. If it uses 3/8 fuel hose. 1984 corvette fuel filter. Both are steel bodied and 10 micron elements. Sediment holds the fuel pump check valves open reducing fuel pressure to the carb. Allowing the engine heat to boil the fuel in the lines. The expanding vapor pushes liquid fuel back to the tank allowing only fuel vapors into the carb. Sediment in the needle asn seat in the carb allows fuel levels to raise until the bowl overflows wicking out the throttle shafts after shutdown.

I had a boat where the morse leaver would foul the furniture in front....just like your set up. I used to have a speed called 'knob off Speed' where I unscrewed the knob on the morse lever to get the lever to go forward further and give me more speed when needed😎

Amazing work with Poem Peter! One thing though; I think that fuel pump sits upside down. I have Carter pump similar to that one and these pumps are filled with gasoline wich works as coolant for the pump motor and the pump housing should face up and the motor down too keep the motor housing filled with gas.

Most electric fuelpumps are filled with gas and it is not a fire hazard, they would not be coast guard approved then? No, these Carter pumps are very reliable. When using a electric pump in a boat, a safety curcuit shold be added, so the pump stops if the oil pressure disappears. That prevents the pump from operating when the motor is not running, as in case a fuel line comes lose. There is special pressure breakers avaliable for this purpose.@@TravelsWithGeordie

Peter, have you considered adding ball valves at both the fuel filter inlet and outlet fittings. They will provide a local fuel shutoff to enable simple and easy filter/motor servicing even though your petrol motor does not have the same bleeding issues as my Yanmar diesel on my sailboat. s/v Jalepeno

One cannot use a glass/ plastic bottom water, fuel filter, for gasoline inside a boat cabin, in Amerka. It is Used only in open hull designs. As you said it’s a diesel fuel filter. PO is not always best safe endorsement.

In the US you cannot use a glass or plastic bowel in an enclosed area, if your engine is gas. You can get metal bowels for most drainage filers. I found out the hard way. Coast Guard inspection.

i have friends who have a 1940 chris craft with the original gas engine which has a glass bowl on it's mechanical fuel pump, the coast guard hasn't said anything negative about it. possibly older vessels are exempt from the rule?

Yes that is true. Also Racor only rates that 500FG filter for diesel. It doesn't meet the specification for an inboard gas boat. If you want to stay with the 500 series, you need a 500MAM. I don't know the rules in Canada, but you might want to ask a surveyor.

talking of Festivals, I am taking Water Rail to the Beccles Wooden Boat show this coming thursday, lots to do, including reattaching many of the fittings to the cabin sides, where they came off so we could varnish, Also on my last trip I added a 50W solar panel and wired it in to the battery bank to keep it topped up between visits. unfortunately when I wired it up I used plastic clips to retain the wires, I have just been using a 3d printed die in a small fly press to make up some brass replacement cable clips, this will give me yet another job to do replacing these before show day (saturday) so thursday we meet up at oulton broad, and have a garden party planned, friday we cruise the 1 1/2 - 2 hour cruise Oulton to Beccles (well we will be decked out with flags etc so its more a procession ), then Saturday and sunday is show time where the boats are open to the public, so everything will be made spick and span for that. so I need to finish the clips and polish them, gather everything I will need for the trip, and then get going. we did get at least 2 coats of varnish on, last trip it was raining a lot so I didnt get additional coats on, but maybe after the boat show, if the weather is good I will have a week aboard to get some jobs done.

@@TravelsWithGeordie Not as quickly as plastic. The heat destroys it much quicker. Just like sunlight on plastic. Its why I no longer use the tube type at all on the cars I build. Also I have never had the copper crack ever. I just don't find them very accurate compared to the sensor types available. But again you get what you pay for. I love to use intellitronix in as many builds as I possibly can.

You'd think in this day and age you could just have a constant gas monitor in the bilge to determine whether or not gas was present and a potential issue that needs attention. The blower just hides a potential issue that may come back and bite you.

@@pauldailey4477 Those of us that work in an industry whereby harmful gases may be present are taught not to rely on your nose, but the gas monitor you take with you. The gas used for cooking and heating will be heavier than air and if it leaks on a boat will gather in the bottom of the boat. Putting an air mover on will purge it out hopefully, but purging is another science that may result in the purge gas just taking the easiest route to the vent point and leaving pockets of the gas you want to remove in situ. If you don't know you have a leak, you wont know you have a problem that needs attention.

I believe the "diesel style" filters with the clear plastic water separator bowls are not supposed to be used with gas. The gas versions have metal bowls. You may be ok because you are not putting the filter in the engine room, but not 100% on that.

Also wanted to mention that the fuel pump needs to be run through an oil pressure switch or another method that will cut power when the engine is not running. There are plenty of boats that have it wired directly to the ignition switch, but that method has filled up many bilges with fuel, which I have seen first hand unfortunately.
