This comment is about three years after the fact but I just found this. I just want to thank you so much for making plans available to your little projects. I may never build them but I can dream.

Instead of poplar, it might be a good idea to make the sides of the box from plywood. That way it'll look like book pages.

Nice project Steve. Glad to see that you got the magnets the right way round so that they don't repel each other !

After reading your newsletter today, I searched and found this video. I have a little store-bought, holiday-themed book box that someone gave me a few years ago, and I've been meaning to make a larger version. This video inspired me to do so - off to the garage. Thanks Steve!

I like the natural wood finish instead of covering it with cloth or leather. Very nice. A high ply plywood might have been a neat touch instead of the poplar, to give the effect of wooden pages

Steve, I use magnets in my woodworking a lot. I used to use epoxy as well, but I found that Loctite gel glue keeps the magnets from coming out after continuous use. Just a tip, and I love the book box. I make decorative boxes so I had to watch this one when I saw the title.

I'm super late to the game, but I just made one of these for my wife's birthday - going to put photos of our years together inside the box. It turned out beautifully - thanks Steve!

You should get one of those drill frame things that you mount on your drill and it can clamp onto your projects for easy level drilling for when you cant use your drill press. I don't for the life of me remember what they are called but you might.

nice job in the future you may consider clamping the wood diagonal to the corner of the table when drilling holes for the hinges so you have access to both sides without having to release and "reclamp" to change the side regards

It is easy to put the magnets in backwards (same poles facing) and the box will not close. I hate when that happens
@MacDonKay7 жыл бұрын
Dennis Adams The easy solution for this is to stack the magnets, add epoxy to both holes, insert the stacked magnets into one side then close the lid which automatically inserts the second magnet in the other side maintaining he correct orientation.

I just built two boxes that look like a book. One has a removable front cover and the other is actually an open top box that slides inside an outer box. The spine is the side of the inner box. I did it this way to avoid the hinges. The one with the removable front cover has a catch on the spine side and an antique key lock on the page side. The box with the inner box has a key lock on the spine. I made the boxes from yellow popular lumber from a tree that I cut. I thinned the lumber to about 1/4 inch for the covers and 3/8 for the sides. About a half inch for the spines. The only problem I had was the wood bowed slightly when dried because it was a bit thin.
