A carpenter made me a similar box when I was a little kid in the early 80s. It has only one big compartment, big enough to keep bills in it. When I was about 8 I wrote on it with big letters _"SECRET SAFE WITH SECRET OPENING",_ and I had it lying around in plain sight. :D My friends always had trouble figuring it out, and most didn't. The text is very faded now, and sometimes I still keep some savings in it. :)

the one i got i didn't have to use step one for the small compartment just the large one

yeah the first drawer is not actually locked in - you can open it without removing the key piece. It's just hidden. You have to remove the key to open the larger drawer.

Heated will dry out the wood and make it crack

I have one similar to it....I opened it once a long time ago and now I can't get it open. I see the key to it but the piece just doesn't budge. Almost like the humidity warped it and make it stick. It might be hammer time.

Try again. It is a cheap puzzle, maybe it has some quality issues.

You have to take out the other little piece next to the smaller compartment, or you won't be able to get the second, larger compartment out.
