Cool Project, best Protection is PAINT (same color as cab) or prettiest is Poly Clear (Many many many many coats like 5 ) ps. flatbed with the ability to put sides on when needed (could build several different sets at different heights and the same for the tail gate.)

So the thing with paint is it kind of negates the whole wood thing. But a spar urethane is a definite possibility.

This is a great idea! Dont stop with the bed, you should make a matching front bumper and shifter knobs.
@FranklinWoodWorks20165 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't a wood bumper be "red-necky?" Shifter knob is a definite.
@TheBigmark505 жыл бұрын
@@FranklinWoodWorks2016 not if you made it match the bed. It doesn't need to be massive but it could compliment the bed.

Yes, you should use treated pine, stain it dark and top it off with many coats of oil based poly.Don't use any glue because being a working vehicle you would probably, over time, need to replace some of the boards. Use exterior rated fasteners of course. What do you think?

White Oak is very durable and rot resistant. Not as cheap as yellow pine but will hold up longer.
@pgfollett5 жыл бұрын
Just what I was going to suggest. Oak has been the favourite wood for flatbed highway trailer manufacturers. If you have access to a mill; rough lumber works for this application.

I've got a ton of white oak, but six foot lengths is the max I have. I may have to change the plan to accommodate the oak, but it's a great idea.

White oak is rot resistant and depending on finish could look very good and it being pretty hard would be scuff resistant.

I would go with Cypress. It's used on the exterior of lots of outbuildings

Plain old construction grade lumber and deck stain. When and if it rots out while you own it just replace it. Probably the cheapest route to go.
@FranklinWoodWorks20165 жыл бұрын
That was my first thought, but I was thinking that yellow pine would split the difference between construction lumber and hard wood. A lot harder than white pine or fir, and potentially a lot better looking.
@paulsmessyworkshop5 жыл бұрын
I agree Rob. I never thought about yellow pine because around here (Michigan) most yellow pine is pressure treated.

White oak, Ash, or Hickory for the bed would be my recommendation, I'd lean towards Ash as it should be really good, and fairly inexpensive. if you don't want a flatbed it would be neat to use a contrasting material for the sides, maybe framed in Ash or White Oak and paneled with walnut, cherry, or hard maple. as to a finish, I'd be inclined to go with an oil finish that gets renewed every 6-12 months, that way you don't have to do any sanding or wipe off dust to renew the finish. It might be advantageous to put something like clear vinyl over the bed to protect it from dings and scrapes, I would want to attach the vinyl with lath screws or similar wide head low-ish profile screws, that way it would be easy to replace every couple of years or as needed. As for style of bed, I haven't made any detailed drawings yet, but my idea for my S10 is to have a flatbed with tool boxes built in below the bed and locations for stakes to be put in the side as well as lots of places to tie things down, I also plan to cantilever out the bed to 8 feet so I don't have sheet goods hanging out the back. for my project I am looking at doing most of the framing out of steel angle iron with a wood deck, wood toolboxes, and a metal tie down rail/stake holder around the bed.

All good ideas. I've been really thinking on making shallow drawers under the bed, but to do that, I'd have to make the top water tight, and that's a glue-up that gives me the willies. But I have a ton of white oak. Thanks for the ideas.
@dscrive5 жыл бұрын
@@FranklinWoodWorks2016 a reason I settled on toolboxes is because it's easy enough to waterproof them, I'm also playing with the idea of making them removable which would make it really handy to keep tools in my shop till I need to travel with them. On a related note, having a long drawer would drive me crazy the first time I had to remove the decking because something got stuck in the back of the drawer haha.

I’d use cedar - Pros: light, insect and rot resistance- cons: relatively weak and soft......I’d counter that by using at least 5/4 and then use a spar poly or epoxy to give you some hardness

I think spray on bed liner over your yellow pine would make a very usable serviceable finish 😎
@randyowens2645 жыл бұрын
Have you considered using the treated wood and using a dye to change the look to something more to your liking? You could dye the boards then assemble them on the truck bed and then put your final finish coat(s) on when it is all assembled and ready for the lights & etc. to be installed. Hope it turns out the way you want it to look! Blessings!!
