I'd like to say, I too am shocked at how different these pickups sound on the video. These were filmed on the same amp, using the same camera, albeit, at perhaps a slightly different angle, using my common amp settings for a dirty sound. It's shocking to me, to hear how compressed sounding the other pickups are on film. To me, the new pickups sounded twice as loud, much more crisp and I felt like I could hear every note. Much more articulate sounding. I don't have a great recording setup, but all things considered, the dramatic change in volume and tone, you hear on KZbin, is absolutely representative of the difference I got in person. I bought these pickups used, and would recommend you do the same as they amount to nearly $400 CAD new. I paid $100 used:-)

New expensive strings and pickup height would have helped too. But like I said...those are among the best mass current produced pickups you can get. Don't forget you tone oil. Lol.
@ReddenDoom7 жыл бұрын
Was good to see the difference. I currently was trying an SGJ next to a special faded from 04 and the volume difference, even with the "same" pickups, was almost doubled on the 04. Good to know that I might not have to yank the pcb but rather just get some other pickups in it.

There is a method to their packaging!! The low E & A are twisted together. So are the D & G, and the B & high E. Also, the packaging is meant to protect the strings from moisture damage because nobody knows what kind of moisture levels vary from region to region and store to store. Unfortunately most people don't recycle like some of us do so D'Addario is trying to use less packaging and protect the strings too. I have the 2013 SGJ. I stuck Dirty Fingers in it. Big improvement as well. Anyway, yours looks & sounds great. 😊

I bought my first SG (special 2015) a month ago, and I am in fucking love!For the life of me, I don’t know why I snubbed these for so many years. I chose this one because it has the 1.8” nut, but aside from that feature, this thing is such a pleasure to play. It has taken the favorite spot held for many years by my Carvin Bolt. Now if I could deal with the static issue on the SG and the LP, all would be perfect.

I have the exact same 2014 SGJ . The satin finish will naturally get shiny with age all on its own . Thats the beauty of the thin satin finish . Mine is aging well and more and more of it is getting shiny - er . "Satine" finish .... lol . I also have a US HWY1 Strat which came with a thin satin nitro finish when I bought it new . That Strat was totally mat black when I bought it new in 2009 . Today she is shiny black with see-through wood grain . I let her age naturally and she is beautiful today . I wouldnt do what you did. But hey , maybe the air is different in your neck of the woods. Cheers from Qc.

I collect vintage Gibson and fancy cork sniffer boutique pickups and those are the only current production Gibson pickups I like. Esp in semi hollows. For your own sake though: try the quick connects vs traditional. Traditional wiring sounds better. Quick connects are like using a cheap cable. Freq's get lost.

this thing sounds hot, dig it. hey, its how an sg should sound. everyone shold have at least an epi sg in their arsenal, just killer guitars for sustain and even better with good pups in em. if you find its too bright, i hope you decide to hold onto it and stick a 500k pot in there before ya do, it makes a big difference with burstbuckers. my guitar is really bright like this too and has that 'twice as loud' kinda feel, a lot of other guitars just dont feel like they've got the same guts that it does. so sometimes i cut back my volume to about 80%, somewhere in that 80-85% spot and it almost gives it a single coil kinda feel while having the balls and sustain. seems like when im recording that it gives it a different color too. ive even staved off changing strings for probably a good ten years longer than i should to dial down that brightness, ive had some success with that. been cool seein ya tool around with this sg, hope you dig it nelson!

My SGJ is an older one with the 490R & 490T pickups. I love the way those sound, just not the way they look. Black plastic covers on them. It is a production to remove the covers too because they mount to the rings via the pickup covers. You would need to buy and install a base plate if you remove the covers.
@nathanward38887 жыл бұрын
my SG Faded has 490R & 490T pickups that were open coil, so I just soldered on the chrome covers, and used silicone underneath to eliminate any microphonic problems. Worked like a charm.

I'd recommend taking the cover off of the neck pickup, but that's usually my preference with every neck humbucker. Just a touch more clarity and highs. My favs are overwound singles, vintage or underwound P-90's or low wound, uncovered humbuckers for the neck.

I know this isn't really your thing but have you ever considered building and improving a kit guitar? I think it would make a fantastic little series. Aside from that I think what you're doing is great, it's really interesting to see all the little tricks you have developed to do things better or easier. keep it up
@imrippingthefuckingheadoff8 жыл бұрын
I'd love to see that! Especially with his excellent finishing techniques (the sonic blue 70's Strat, the goldtop Les Paul, etc).
@WoodesosGuitarMods8 жыл бұрын
You know I have thought about building from scratch, but there are so many guitar that already exist, that I want to get my hands on, that I haven't yet tried. Honestly, I don't know if I ever will. So may guitars already exist that have a story, some trouble to sort out, and improvements to be made, that I may just always stay doing this sort of stuff. The thing about a kit for me, is I can't be sure of the quality of the components, the machining, or the fit. I've repaired a few of these and the story is always the same. They aren't quite cut properly, don't really fit together all that well, and have absolutely no resale value. Since I maintain this channel solely on trades and buying and selling, I couldn't do anything with a home built kit other than keep it. At the moment, I feel like keeping guitars is simply holding onto something keeping me from the next one;-)

Huge improvement in tone with the burstbuckers and the oiled finish turned out great . That guitar has a good tone to begin with and the 24 frets are a plus . Btw my 2014 Gibson SGJ has a 60 cycle hum when i plug it into my tube amps , dunno if its the pots or what i have to do to it to make it more silent ?
@nathanward38887 жыл бұрын
My 2016 SG Faded has the hum too, but it's definitely not the pots. I know because I stripped out the plug-and-play PCB and installed 500k CTS pots, with the tone ones being push pull to split the coils. After rewiring the whole thing I still have that hum. I'm guessing some copper tape is in order next.

What is the best way to keep a guitar that is not used very much I have heard to de-tune what do you think
@imrippingthefuckingheadoff8 жыл бұрын
DO NOT detune it or take the strings off! The strings should always stay on so it keeps the tension on the neck and doesn't fuck up the truss rod. When you bring it back out of storage, the fretboard will be really dry, so you should restring it and hydrate it with lemon oil.

Tru-oil is great and creates a great finish - but it ages badly in the bottle. Shelf-life is maybe a year or two tops. After that it gets thicker in the bottle and won't harden like it used to. You might find that future projects won't turn out the same and stay sticky - in that case it's time to buy a new bottle.
