Woodhead Railway Station Explore ( Sheffield to Manchester Line)

Join me on my visit to the western portals of the Woodhead tunnels with some history on the railway station and construction of the tunnels

National Grid stated many years ago that trains can still run in the tunnel. If this is untrue the cables should be transferred into a smaller dedicated cable tunnel to match those in the London area and train tunnel return to Network Rail.

Visited this site about a year after the rails had gone and before what was then National Grid had taken over the tunnels, a lot of rail infrastructure, power boxes, narrow rail for maintenance, gravel etc. as said before a sad and stupid decision to close such a vital link between to of the norths largest cities.

This route was one of my favourite train rides from Manchester Picadilly to Sheffield Victoria in beautiful ex London Midland coaches hauled by a dc electric loco. When I visit the heritage Great Central Railway at Loughborough I explain to my wife that this is the same Railway as the Woodhead line I.e. the Great Central from Manchester to London Marylebone.

Thank you so much ! Yeah if you type in “middle black cloughs waterfall “ on your google maps It should take you to the lay-by you can’t miss it Then park up and walk down to the bottom 😃

I remember tracks there up until maybe mid 80s. Think the electric rail pylons had gone by then. Closing it was a bit of a shame and a waste of time Thanks for the vid
