The Woodhead line should never have closed. Absolutely disgraceful!

What a waste! I`m a signaller on the hope valley line which is now at capacity, And with DB Shenker and Freightliner wanting to run more freight traffic from peak forest and tunstead running trains off chinley junction without impacting on other services is becoming impossible! Another great railway move!!!!

Yeah, and yet another possible big mistake is what they've done now where they've moved the grid cables into the later tunnel so it can't be reopened again. And surely no-one would even consider boring another tunnel alongside the Dore and Totley tunnel on the Hope valley line, and having to expand all the rest of the route to four tracks, and why go to all that trouble when the Woodhead route is already built and with overhead line clearances too. It's just insanity, just like the other daft decision to shut the line through Fallowfield when it's now needed for freight services which now have to squeeze in with passenger services on a narrow two track viaduct through Manchester city centre, utter madness! Another great British rail management cock-up, just like when they carried on building steam loco's in the 60's. And now the Fallowfield line has been built on and filled in etc. so it can't be economically reopened, what a disaster, and I thought I've made some bad decisions.

The line was closed because it was literally the only electrified line in the UK still running on 1.5 kV DC as opposed to 25 kV AC like the rest of the country. Converting the line was deemed more expensive than closing it hence why it ended up the way it did. It's closure was nothing to do with the Beeching cuts, he actually want to keep it open and close the Hope Valley line.

@JohnnyWaterbucket Politicians had nothing to do with the closure of the Woodhead route, British Railways had everything to do with it.

The original comment I replied to said it was Mrs Thatcher who privatised British Rail. I was only pointing out that he was wrong. You seem a little upset. I'm not surprised. Don't worry, it always hurts to be wrong.

John Major. Since you didn't know that, I'm going to assume you weren't there.

The line was closed by BR, not Tories. If I'm not mistaken it had something to do with BR folk in the Midlands.

Well who was in power between Thatcher and Blair?
@theredraven

Once again, Thatcher isn't the one who privatised the railway. And why do we subsidise the railways still? Subsidies should end.

@Tommunbeig Dear Margaret had nothing to do with the selling off of British Rail (something that lost money for around 38 years straight from 1959 to 1997).
@theredraven

In 1996 Thatcher hadn't been Prime Minister for six years. And if they weren't subsidised you know where they would get their money from? The paying customer. That's how every other company has to make money. No more handouts. You must be pretty thick to not know who was the Prime Minister who pushed privatisation through.

Considering she had written off the idea privatising BR, why would she then push her successor (who she didn't get along with) to do it? Nice logic kid.

I take it you’re 5 years old. Margaret hadn’t been around when they were privatised knuckle. And no she didn’t control Major. By the way: I’ve never seen one Labour government renationalise a single former public industry. Why is that?
@theredraven

Why would it be dug up? All they have to do is learn to make money like every other business does.

O yes and if the subsidies did end - the railway would be dug up ! by the way do you like railways or do you complain when you are sat in a traffic jam. Work this one out - over the decades BR dug lots of railway lines up - then the Tories privatised it - so more trains were added - BUT you have less railway lines ! so lets put more lines down get more freight on the railway (less traffic on the roads) and the railway with railway people like me (not university wizz kids)

jesus its like talking to a brick - in 1996 the Tories were in power and pushed through to private the railways, if the railways weren't subsidied, where would they get the money from to keep the railways running- one question, do you work for the railway ? because it sounds like one of these outsiders who hasn't got a clue
