...today in Great Britain, there are numerous railway lines using electricity. In the 1950s, however, these were much less common. The Woodhead Line was electrified in the 1950s and remained that way for nearly 30 years. Can Railworks bring its unique history back?

Special note to those who aren't very experienced with driving in Railworks: This route is a serious rollercoaster. The climb up to the Woodhead Tunnel is brutal and if you don't manage your locomotive and train carefully, you may stall out and grind to a stop. Worse is going down the other side. Remember that some of the coal wagons in this pack are unfitted, effectively meaning that they have no brakes. Thus, all of your braking force will come from the locomotives and the handbrake in the guard's van. Therefore, descending the latter half of the line on either side of the Tunnel must be done with great care. I have seen multiple videos of people losing control and running away after not properly handling their train down the grade. Particular care should be taken at the following stations: Peniston, Dinting, Guide Bridge, and Ardwick, all of which feature extremely sharp curves that will throw you from the rails if you take them too fast.

Tinsley yard came a little bit later than the Woodhead electrification. The 1500V DC (Although by this time declared "non standard") was extended into Tinsley yard. There was Mottram yard on the Manchester side and Rotherwood sidings was where steam/diesel swapped for electric traction on the freights heading via Sheffield BTW the 1954 Woodhead Tunnel was made of a certain concrete that forced a ban of steam through it.

Great Video, the route caputures the essence of the line, most of which now forms part of a walking/cycle route called the Trans Pennine Trail. The 8F Steam locomotive is not typical of the line and wouldnt have been seen on it.

If I might make a suggestion, you ought to review the Western Lines of Scotland route if you're ever of the notion to show another British route. It's one of the best RW routes ever, if not the best, in my humble opinion, and well worth the asking price if you like a long run. Although 116 miles as the crow flies, the mileage works out to roughly 140 miles, plus the branch lines and yards, all of it beautifully detailed.

The green mainline diesel is an English Electric type 3 (later known as a class 37) and these powered the Harwich Boat Train, which left the Essex port taking passengers from the Hook of Holland to Sheffield and Manchester. As the Continental the train had originally gone forward to Liverpool but by 1965 terminated at Manchester. They were excellent locos, introduced in 1961 and still used on the network today. The EM1 loco had a distinctive running sound, a little like a vacuum cleaner in a steel tube - they were real workhorses. The Dutch rail system had a 1500dc section and the more powerful EM2 locos were sold to the Netherlands after the closure of passenger services in January 1970. This is a fascinating video - thanks for uploading.

At one stage they were when they were built in WW2 and sent to the LNER as Class O6 and there is a picture of one under the wires at LNER Encyclopedia but for 1954, you're right.

This railroad line reminds me of the NEC during the early fifties when the Pennsylvania Railroad's electric locomotives ran alongside the steam and diesel locomotives in many parts. Great review, by the way.

I see this and I can't help but wish this eye candy was available for MSTS. But can it do what I'm doing right now operations wise, that is the million dollar question. Still might pick this up just for the beauty of it all.

The 1950's tunnel was only electric powered until after closure of passenger services in 1970 and was freight was electric throughout, as there were no ventilation shafts in the tunnel in addition to the use of concrete that prevented steam traction. Diesels did run occasional passenger only as diversionary route after 1970 but would have been mainly blue with blue/grey stock, as the line closed throughout before privatisation. There are photos of electric locos pulling dead steam locos across to the works at Gorton, which closed in 1960's.

Was kinda surprised to see this as your newest review (thought you'd be gushing about the K4s), but my gods, was it ever epic! The visuals in this one are incredible, and the music choices are perfect. This has easily become one of my favorite ATR episodes, and this route is definitely firmly on my to-buy list. If it's not too bold to ask, what're the specs on your compy there? I'm thinking of upgrading my own box & it'd be nice to know what to aim for to get performance like that.

As a child this route was where at was at and I was disappointed as a teenager when it closed. Hopefully raw economics will dictate a reopening of this route complete with its crown of overhead catenary. Many of us in the UK need to recycle our old cooking oil and dripping from grilling meat to use as (diesel) motor fuel. This is legal in the UK.

Why did you become interested in this route? My US interest is the Milwaukee Road's electric divisions over the Rockies. Both routes need to be revived with electric traction throughout.

If you do review the western, I reccomend getting the class 31, class 111, and the 3F Jinty from the steam store to go with it, for all three engines complement the driving experience on the route, especially the amazing Jinty, that one's the most realistic steam engine ever made for RW. Don't get me wrong, the growl of the classic diesels has its charms to, especially the 31. Cheers, Brendan O.

Aye, considering we Brits invented the railway. Makes me wonder why American railways are railroads, yet their permanent way seems to be known as 'maintenance of way', not 'maintenance of road'... hmm.
