Woodland Photography Guide Actual Camera POV - Ft Nikon Z8

In this video, I explain how I go about finding compositions in the woods.
I know that some people struggle to find compositions in woodlands but if you follow along with my instructions, I'm sure it'll help.

The secret (if there is such a thing) to finding woodland compositions is by using the camera's live view. In my opinion, creating a workflow like this will really help if you're struggling. The human peripheral vision is between 30 to 50mm. Therefore, if you apply a longer lens to your camera you're already seeing the world differently.
I'm not saying this will work for everyone, nor am I saying this is the best way, I'm simply saying, that seeing the world through your lens will offer you a unique perspective.

Well, I go to the foot of my sock. I never thought I would see the day that the Canon man through & through comes over to the dark side of Nikon. Working with Mali, I would liken him to Sir Patrick Moore. Maybe not dress wise but, enthusiasm and so excitable, like a puppy on heat! We all love Mali dearly. Photographic balance and visual weight is something I have been working on in the last year. If the image doesn't work walk away, whereas before I would just snap away & try to make it work in post. It is all part of the rich tapestry of life. Thank you gentlemen for the woodland lessons. We will call this one a draw and you both balanced the sea saw wonderfully.

Listening to the back & forth around fine-tuning compositions was a total blast! I think I often try to have that discussion with myself in my own head, but it's nowhere near as effective. Maybe I just need an inner Mali as my foil whenever I go out into the local woodlands 😂

Very good Gary. It's not always good comparing yourself with what you see from others. There's a whole army of woodland photographers and the odds of some getting fantastic shots are great. That said, there are far more that are simply pants but who cares, as long as they are enjoying themselves and happy with what they have, that's all that matters. Your fine art is outstanding and many would give their right arm to be able to create what you have. Keep it up mate.

What a fabulous location! We don't have woodlands as such here in NSW Australia. Our weather is much dryer and our trees are totally different. We do however have redgum forests and at this time of the year (spring) there are a lot of wildflowers around. We do have the bracken fern and I love it when it is dried out and brown. A fun video, thanks! Mali is great value; what a strong accent. Great thoughts on composition but I did get distracted by the change in saturation through the video. The difference between your video camera and through the lens with a poloriser, colour wise, was enormous. I’m guessing you are on “landscape picture control” which, with a poloriser is a bit too much for my eyes. I use “neutral” which makes me work a bit harder...What a great place!

I only ever desaturate images. Looking on my phone and the images look desaturated but on my pc they look very colourful 😁 They’ll be brilliant in print

Anther great Vlog Gary and some great images captured, good that you show how different people have different mindsets when taking images and how you veiw with differnt focal lengths during shooting. Zoom lenses play their part in this to varying degrees as you have shown to some great extent, well done. On a sidenote, I do not know if its just me but the images do not seem as sharp as your normal captures and no my computer has not changed in any way during your various vlogs. Hope you are enjoying your new camera must take some getting used to after shooting so long with Canon.

The images look like that on my pc but quite desaturated on my phone. The only tinkering with the colours I did in post was to desaturated them.

Gary, WHAT you do w/ all photos you take, why not have a sell on your "10.000" photos you taken, and let people pick and choose the RAW file, for like 2-3 Pound, instead for letting them dust in a drawer, ... think would be a good idea, and later on a photo contest, who have enchanted your great photos.... ;)

Derek wasn't impressed. Blaming the camera. He showed himself to be an amateur. I'm a retired pro who shot for 35yrs. Only an amateur would make a such an irrelevant remark. Give Gary any of the major brands and he will come back with stunning shots that Derek (or I) would be unable to identify came from which camera they came from. Particularly after post. It's the calibre of the photographer behind the camera.
