I’ve have one of these that’s years old. Great tool. I keep it in my truck tool box year around and it has come in handy a thousand times on the ranch. I remember buying it at a garage sale maybe 15-20 years ago for $3. What a great buy.

Just found one in the garage. Been hidden behind some old lumber. Cleaning it up now. Canvas sheath with the booklet/manual. Can't wait to get it sharpened. Great video.

Just picked one up in mint condition with the leather stacked handle at the flea market for $50. I used it as a bargaining chip to get a nice black demon straight razor for $10 instead of $20 as well.

Just picked one up today for 5 bux at a Yard sale cause she thought it was to bad to be sharpened, but I took care of that with a belt sharpener and a wheatstone. Mines got a wrapped leather scale or handle and a big ole knuckle duster over the knuckles. It's stamped made in Reading Pennsylvania and a Army airborne regiment stamp. Bad boy cuts threw tree's like a bulldozer and that hook is great for limbing.

I’ve yet to see anyone use the hook the way it was designed. It is designed to cut saplings and vines growing vertically. Hook it beside the sapling, and pull up. It will slice diagonally through the stem. Wear gloves as it will commonly slap the growth against your hand. Stop using it like a hatchet for limbing. Trust me. Been using one since the 70s when they came with the canvas sheath, and stacked leather handle.

Got my Woodsman Pal back in the mid 80’s . Leather handle with handle guard, no sheath, paid 25$. Bout 10 years ago got the leather sheath, great tool.

Bryan, the hook is not for chopping per se. It is intended to be used to grab limbs, vines, and brush/grasses and pull them and pull cut them. As you can see in your testing it is very hard to swing the hook to get an accurate enough cut to chop with it.

I am wanting to get one of the old Signal Corps models with the hand guard. Saw one at the antique store recently for $160 and it sold quick. This isn't just a billhook. It is more of an axe than a machete. It is not thin and is not supposed to flex. It is designed to work as a knife, axe, scythe, draw knife and super heavy machete.

Nice video, Bryan. Back in the day they advertised the "none pointy" end as an impromptu digging tool..they are an awesome "bushcraft" tool but I'd rather have my knife and my camp axe.

I have one and it's great for its purpose. The hook is not for chopping though. Place the hook at the base of a vine or sapling and pull up. If it fits inside of the hook it can be cut.

I didn’t buy one when they were $79 when I was young. I thought it was a neat idea but for $79 , at that time, I could I could get a good hatchet and other equipment. Can’t remember just what I bought.

I have one from before the company was sold to whoever owns it now. Mine is the leather stack handle with the gaurd. It's very useful on my property, stays in the 4wheeler and gets used daily. Great for what it's meant for, horrible for what it's not.

The military version was my first exposure back decades ago. Have been meaning to pick one up regardless of the price because of how well it’s made. I’ve just been procrastinating on which one to purchase. Still haven’t made up my mind. :(

Good practical tool. We have one my wife inherited from her father, simple wood handle and zippered canvas sheath. Some of the actual WWII issue models with the open face snap-in scabbard also had a bevel on the tip to facilitate use as a shovel; they had stacked leather and a D-guard handle. In a way I’m saddened that they’ve chosen the high priced “pride of ownership” or “collectible” marketing strategy; I consider these a simple hard use tool. BTW many folks use the hook more for grabbing and moving brush than cutting it.

got a few PAL 36 org WW2 knives they are great and as this is going back to 1941 mil spec, so for collectors this will be great even with the price $$

I would have liked to see you try some baton work. This is a bushcraft thing that is often needed.

@@SurvivalOnPurpose I beg to differ. In my opinion, a bushcraft situation often requires clearing a place to set up and build a camp. This tool screams for this purpose. One of my bilhooks has a saw in place of the long blade this one has. Between the two types tools, two of us were able to clear and make camp near Valdosta, Ga. in under four hours. Yes, I get down your way sometimes. I have family there.

Well, think of the area it was really made for in WW2, the jungles of Asia and the Pacific islands, so vines, saplings, actual brush is where the tool shines. It isn't going to be ideal for larger wood. Frankly, it's great for your home where weeds have gotten large and out of control, especially with that hook if near an obstacle you don't want to hit.

Apparently a company named Pro Tool Industries manufactured this tool from 1999-2018 under license from the current owners (Skyline Toolworks)of the design and trademark. Pro Tools kept cutting corners trying to compete with cheapo Chinese knock-offs and the quality suffered until Pro Tools went out of business. So the Skyline decided to return to the original Made in the USA quality.
