Maybe I missed it, but it seems to me you missed the absolute most important thing about wool ... the fact that it still retains a high insulative value when wet. For a Woodsman out in inclement weather, this may be the difference between life and death.

I also comb the thrift stores for Bush clothes. A lot of suit pants are made of merino wool. They make great Bush plants. Usually a good relaxed fit that allows easy movement and the pockets are usually deep. They hold up surprisingly well too.

Love that anorak Wade. I just showed my wife... she’s a professional glove maker and seamstress. I asked her if she could make me one similar trimmed in leather. She said it wouldn’t be very hard to do once she has a pattern. I told her I’ll drop by the thrift store and look for a over sized hoodie to tear apart for a pattern 😎

as I grew up in Latin America (Patagonia, Andes, and Amazonas) I got plenty of experiences with natural fibers, especially wool and cotton/hemp. As a youngster I always wore untreated wool ponchos and sweaters, as the Indians did (Lama, Alpaca and Sheep wool) But then "modernity" arrived and we slowly changed into Polyester garments... BUT after freezing and sweating for ages inside Gore-Tex & Co I am going back to natural wool (lanoline-rich) and treated canvas (beeswax) And I am not disappointed! It is obvious that the manufactures should attain better quality levels than my old indigenous garments, and that multi-fiber garments can serve a wider range of uses and performance requirements, but the essential thing still remains a very simple one: quality never gets out of style, and these natural products can have a very high intrinsic value! This also opens interesting opportunities for local communities that decide to embark in this quality crusade for functional design, performance and workmanship, which is good for sustainable local economies and also for the environment!!!

Wool is a great natural material. A lady in my church made me an Anorack , It is great around the camp but a little bit heavy on the trail. It is great for hunting on cold windy mornings. Thanks for the talk on wool. The tea looked refreshing on a cold day. I love the nano stove. A great piece of gear to carry to the woods. Happy Thanksgiving Woodswalker! We have a great country and much to be thankful for.

I like that Anorack.I too really like wool and the benefits it has to offer. I went to the website to check out their gear....very nice gear and the pricing is actually comparably reasonable for the quality and craftsmanship. I could see pairing the Loden Green 100% Wool Anorak with the Arctic Anorak or the Boreal Windrak. I think it would be a great investment, but having the opportunity to get a lot of use with them here in NW Arkansas might be a challenge...still be nice gear to have even if it only got occasional winter months use. Thanks for the video and for sharing.

You mentioned wool is silent. This is what converted me. I had synthetic gear and the noise of nylon zipping and swishing drove me nuts. Thats when I started the make the change to wool. Wool also breathes so much better. I don't have to peel layers off because the wool can breath.

Yes exactly. I bought a goretex military surplus jacket that is super durable and looks awesome...but it's so ridiculously loud I never wore it hunting once. Pants or bibs would be even worse. Now is use wool bibs and a microfiber outer gortex jacket in winter which are very quiet. Goretex is only good when it it like -7 Celsius or colder too.

Got the same Anorak from Boreal for Christmas. Just as you said, they are great to deal with. Prom replies to questions I had. Took about 3 weeks to get it here and that was right with what he told me it would take. Just gotten to wear a few times so far. Still working out the right combination of what to wear underneath for the best results. Took it to the shooting range last Saturday afternoon. T-shirt, light vest and the Anorak and I was good for the two hours I was shooting. Great video on a great product!

Also it looks really cold out there, where I am in England we dropped to -6 C and the coldest I have experienced is -16 C and that was a one-off many years ago. But the cold brings great beauty. Lovely talk on wool. I have an alpaca wool blanket that I bought in Ecuador in 1984 when I was serving onboard USS Skipjack during UNITAS '86. I have used it on submarines, aircraft carriers, in my house, and in the woods. It has served me well, retains no odor, and shows almost no signs of wear. It's a double size and I think I paid $10.00 for it. Also looking at a Boreal Mountain Anorak for cold days and nights. Keep those videos coming.

Good video. I've been saving up for wool. Time to get rid of the bulk of my synthetic crap. Except for work clothes. It'll keep 80% of it's insulating properties when wet. Naturally water resistant like you said. Naturally doesn't hold the stink. Self cleaning to a degree when you dunk it in water and hang it up to dry. Won't burn but can smolder when embers get in it. And a host of other properties Ive missed

Love the video. It reminds me of my earlier life. I still use some wool though often I am using synthetics. I do at least some work out in the extremes of nature even now in my rather vigorous old age ;-). Wool is what you need if you are beyond the reach of man and of the modern. Wool works. Cotton is the fabric to die in if it is cold. Note: I planning to purchase a full on sheep skin vest and some more wool poly blends to wear at the skin level.

Excellent products. Great vid. I just went browsing there, and for me, the windrak looks like the perfect one for me. I am no longer physically able to trudge around my property much in the winter here in Maine....but for 3 seasons I am outside daily. Love waxed canvas under a layer or two. I put off what i sarcastically call Big Boy BTU's:) and stay plenty warm just breathing:) Love your videos, they are a breath of fresh air. Literally.

Out of curiosity, why are you guys interested in a cotton anorak? Wouldn’t a 100% cotton anorak (Windrak) over top of a wool anorak just eventually become a soaked wet blanket on top of your wool anorak? Or is it just a strategy for dry cold days?
@Woodswalker1965
@Woodswalker1965 2 жыл бұрын
You're correct on that it's for dry very cold days, wet cotton is not something you want on your body. . The moisture from your body will travel through the cotton anorak and freeze. At this point you can just brush the ice crystals off. It's a good system during the right conditions. Thanks for watching and for the great question👍

That's a great anorak, although i prefer something that zips up, for convenience . I have a couple of old, woollen military sweaters and an LLBean wool blanket lined barn coat that i love. Normally i don't mind a little of the rough feel of wool, but these sweaters feel like i'm wearing a cactus, gotta wear something under them. Stay warm, it was -18c when i walked the dog this morning.

@Woodswalker1965

Thanks for watching and congrats on the new Loden ! The best way to dry out wet wool is slowly with mild heat. In the field a low campfire works well. If it gets really wet you might want to gently reshape it while its drying. Take care!

@@vincentferrari9683 well I have quite a lot of wool, some of it is a blend and some is 100%. I don't feel any difference with a 90% blend vs 100%. Some people think that a slight blend will make the garment stronger overall. That doesn't mean that 100% wool is weak though, it's awesome. I would stay away from items less than 90% if you're looking for maximum warmth, breathability and water resistance. I always like to avoid getting my wool wet though as it becomes quite heavy. I heartily recommend Boreal Mountain Anoraks. I've worn other brands and I feel this one is top of the line. I hope this helps my friend. Take care, Wade

Hi John. I usually wear a large jacket but went with a xl anorack. It leaves a lot of room for layering underneath. I bought it with the possibility of layering a light down jacket underneath in extreme cold. I think the best way is to take your measurement and add at least 6 inches to your chest and use that number to order off the BMA size chart. I went even bigger than that. Hope that helps. I run hot so wool and me make a lot of heat. Investment? Baloney. That anorak of yours set you back a car payment while I am at the local Goodwill store getting hardly-used 100% thick wool sweaters purchased for a song. They were probably donated by men who thought wool was itchy. I like the itch factor as I think it promote blood flow and more warmth. Sweaters are perfect to layer with a waterproof outer layer as I don't find wool as water-resistant as you do. If the sky opens up or the snow is wet and windy, you will want a Gortex outer. They say wool will still warm if it is wet, but I don't want to find out if that is true.
