here I turn a 1/8" thin bowl from walnut, with a flared rim and a small foot. I used my air carver for the first time to pierce a ring of random holes through the wood to create a pretty cool bowl in the end, ive started to watch other carvers as it has peaked my interest.
I hope that you enjoy this video

I have to admit I thought you ruined the bowl when you pierced it. Then you showed the final product. I love when I'm proven wrong lol. Absolutely Beautiful job. I really like how the grain almost has a swirl pattern look to it. We never know what will work or look good until experiment. Thanks for showing that gorgeous piece of work.

That turned out quite well Rob. I don;t think people realise just how much work and time it takes to do what looks a small amount of work. Well done!

Piercing, an interesting idea to add to bowl turning. The bowl is beautiful and the piecing accent is terrific. I really enjoy your channel. Thanks for sharing.

Mike You should try it, I was worried that it would ruin the piece but I am very happy with it, I still need to turn the foot off, it only weighs 82 grams as is so will be even less when that's done 😊 Take care Rob

That was daring, creative, and the results were stunning. Loved it. By the way, we seem to share the same lathe model. To prevent the shaft from turning, I have screwed in a bolt into the threaded hole at the outside tip of the shaft then secured the bolt with a wrench. Not pretty, but it works. Levis Canada

Mike No I don't lol, really it didn't take as long as I thought as long as the wall is thin it goes quick, only issue I had was it's a bit bitey 😉 Take care Rob

What no out takes at the end lol . Beautiful bowl . I've been debating if I should make one of my scrapers into a negative rake . And after seeing how well yours worked I'm going to try it . Take care .

Hi Rob! I came to this video from a link on Kostas's channel. I really enjoyed your work on this piece and like, Kostas, I feel inspired! I only have a Dremel so may look for a tool similar to yours for the piercing. Great looking thin bowl. Thanks for posting! Phil

honestly it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be, the key is a thin wall so that the piecing doesn't take too long, I'm sure too that there are better ways to do it more efficiently and effectively, so I'm sure to watch others, learn and apply it to a future project. cheers Rob

It sounds like the fan in the motor should be payed attention to, it gives off a scraping sound when you turn the lathe.....
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning 6 жыл бұрын
that is the belt that you can hear, i replaced the original belt as it stretched meaning my low speed was 660 rpm too fast, the belt i have now is modular fibre glass, and it makes the noise as each link of it turns on the pulleys. the motor is fine. thanks for watching Rob

Good job turning the thin rim in preparation for the piercing. How did the final sanding go? What did you learn from that?
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning 6 жыл бұрын
richard stein The sanding went easy, the negative rake scraper took care of any tool marks etc so sanded very well Mostly I learned that you need to grind at an angle rather than at 90 deg as it gets a bit grabby. Take care Rob
@richardstein7956
@richardstein7956 6 жыл бұрын
Oh, I thought you did a sanding after the piercings as well. That's the step I'm referring to.
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning 6 жыл бұрын
richard stein Ah I see, yes I did 320-400 after, just remember to support the opposite side of the thin wall so not to break, no real pressure required anyway
