Fantastic job! I have tried this before with written directions. And it appears to be like my first grade teacher said, "does not follow instructions well". Seeing it done I am ready to do this right. Thanks Mike and all involved. Thanks to Woodchuckers also one of the best FB pages ever!

Mike, I tried your hot glue idea to re-mount a completed large ash bowl so I could remove a badly applied finish and start over. This was my first attempt at using wipe on poly. Anyway, I hot clued the bottom to a waste block, sanded, re-finished and removed the bowl...no problem. Thanks for this great tip. Hot glue will hold very well.
@MikeWaldt9 жыл бұрын
+Gary McCoy Hi Gary, I'm glad you agree with my faith in hot glue and it's reliability. The key is to make sure that the glue is as hot as your gun will get it, and that the glue block, and piece to be turned are dry, which I realise you already know :) Take care Mike

Mike, I had a fun time doing one of these, and have to do more, maybe a couple dozen so I can demo it. I did post a link to it on Sawmill Creed forums under a thread about scrap wood turning projects. Layout is pretty critical on getting an even rim thickness. I found out I could 'cheat' a bit when power sanding the inside to remove a bit extra, and by rounding over the edges a bit, I can hide most of it. I don't think 'perfect' lay out is possible. Great project. Oh, I never use hot melt glue, but did for this one. It does work.
@MikeWaldt9 жыл бұрын
robohippy I am so pleased you enjoyed making them Reed, as you say accuracy is paramount. Thanks for the "cheat", I will remember that. I am also honoured that my "inspirer" has been "inspired", if you get my meaning. Also glad you finally gave the hot glue a try, and liked it :) Take care Mike

Great video MIke. I wish it had been a couple of months earlier though. lol I could have used the technique for the footplate of my traction engine project. I also use hot glue regularly. After some disasters at the beginning, I find it invaluable. When I first started using hot glue I used a very cheap glue gun (from Woolies) and it simply did not get the glue hot enough. I bought an Arrow brand gun from Axminster, and never looked back. I also made the mistake of trying to hot glue green wood. That doesn't work either. Keep 'em coming, and ignore the haters. I have learned loads from watching your videos, and in all honesty - no-one really cares who thought of it first. I think I'm the first person to turn a gum-ball machine because I haven't seen any others - but I'll be willing to bet I'm probably not.

An excellent demonstration Mike, contains everything required to make an attempt. I've had reasonable success with hot glue, but I'm not sure my machine gets warm enough. It also has a useless nozzle, not a fine little pipe like yours! Could I ask which gun you use? Many thanks for sharing, Tom

Tom Stratton Thank you Tom, I have the Bosch PKP 18E, which has served me very well for nearly four years now, here's the link www.axminster.co.uk/bosch-pkp-18e-glue-gun, also the glue sticks www.axminster.co.uk/hot-melt-glue-sticks-white Hope this helps Cheers Mike

Great video Mike. I've been wanting to attempt one of these for awhile,but the instruction I saw at a club recently seemed to over complicate it somewhat( "you MUST do it this way" etc.). Thanks for simplifying things! All the best.

Mike your videos got me hooked! These wood turning videos are mesmerizing and I want to start turning myself. I was wondering if you have any input on affordable tools/lathe that are good for beginners. Cheap as possible without buying total crap tools would be nice as I am very young (15). Thanks so much, keep putting out videos!
