Hello Stewart, Spot on! For the live stream, it's al good. It depends on the time available and the complexity of the work, but possibly reverse the areas coloured; the bowl but not the rim. Or, make the rim deeply concave and the centre convex, maybe with a finial centre handle, (cake stand style). Or possibly incorporate metal leaf into the top or base. Or colours and plain sepated by beads. Or a double sided platter. Or going back to the boss earlier, make it a box that hides the real goodies from the lesser goodies in the trough around the edge. Regards, Glenn. :-)

Garry not Linda. I second what Phillip said about posting later. I don't have time to watch a long live stream in one shot. If I may I also would suggest that if the stream is to be on a topic such as coloring with dyes or airbrushing a bowl have pieces ready to go and dispense with turning the piece. It's not that I'm not interested in turning a bowl or goblet or what have you, if the topic is painting a goblet with a 4 inch roller, let's get on with it then. OK, I'm being facetious but I'm really there for the topic as advertised other functions are really off topic. I've been a recent subscriber and really love your work.

Oh good, now I can consider myself a good pupil... I did watch until the end and am quite excited about the live streaming prospect. Although watching the live streams as I do and trying to catch up with the regular posts of people I follow can take up a pretty large part of the day if I am not careful. ANYWAY: The answer to the question - How about a live "taping and colouring" session, or a "airbrush colouring" session. Not many of those around but I'm not sure how drying times would impinge. Back to the subject of today... rather lovely and pretty elegant in its simplicity of technique. Just shows that I don't have to go mad to get results that can look striking.

Hi Stewart That took me back in time, the colour and finish reminded me of an upmarket toilet seat, probably Harrods, certainly not school because it was so cold back then the toilet seats were used for firewood. Nice looking bowl/platter but not one for my collection BUT just after 9.15 minutes into the video the sanded back black looked lovely and I think if you had gone possibly down the Silver Gilt Cream route it would have looked stunning with a couple of bursts on the lathe of Cut & Polish followed by Chestnut Microcrystalline, but what do I know? Glad to hear you're doing live streaming, really look forward to that. Cheers Roger

I was hoping for a slightly redder red, but the gold saved the day. The natural wood in the center actually seemed to have a gold tinge itself, perhaps that's why it worked so well. Glad you're feeling stronger, more videos for us! Maybe not live stream material, but what started your interest in wood color in the first place?
@stewartfurini
@stewartfurini 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers, Bill - glad you liked the gold. I would have liked a stronger red too, but sometimes the colour of the wood affects the colour of the stain. I've had some ash pieces where I've got a deep red glow, but not this time...

A lovely and fine blatter. Quite pleasing. I am not a fan of this 'blatter" as a word for this after checking the dictionary this morning. I do wonder what factor was at play with the slow absorption - sanding, wood density, wood dryness, wood species, grain direction, etc. I have too seen this effect when over sanding. As a sandologist from only the best schools, I do love a 600 grit feel. On the odd day you may find me gritting and grinning over 1000. Gosh, I love the red on black. I would not have added the second coat of red but after you did it, I was like, whoa, that is exactly what it wanted. Could you do something on the transition edge between front and back? Perhaps I am too particular on getting a sweet and straight line between the two spaces?

Stewart, is it typical to have a black base to start with, whether it is paint or stain? Is there a particular purpose for it? Thanks.
@stewartfurini
@stewartfurini 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph - for this technique, the black helps to emphasise the grain more. I did a rippled maple bow a few months back where I didn't use black, and you can see in that piece how the grain isn't as prominent due to not having black put on first. For the ones I use acrylic paint on, the ebonising lacquer provides a nice canvas to work off with colours. Cheers!

hi Stewart , not a fan of coloring , but it seems that it is becoming popular , I think if that was the only blank I'ed got, I would have drilled out the knot holes and put in wood plug ,,. You usually colour then take it off ,this time you have finished it,,. Really like the finish but the knot holes draw the eye ,,. I subbed ,,.I want to see what's next ,,.Regards Alf

At the "second coat" statement (10:02 in video) did you let the 1st coat of red dry, then apply the 2nd coat. or did you just apply the 2nd coat right after the 1st coat??

Beautiful and great video! I cannot get Chestnut products in the USA. Do you have an alternative for the paint/stain that I can acquire here? Exactly what are they oil based? Thank you for sharing your talent!

Thanks, John - I think you can get the stains from here in the USA: www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/148/6338/chestnut-Spirit-Stain They are alcohol based stains. I have only used the rainbow colours, not the wood colours. Cheers!

Live streaming eh? Sounds good. Do you have any olive wood left as supplied by our mutual friend in Sami? Love to see you turn that (miss the smell).

Hi Stewart, Beautiful as ever. Airbrush would be good for me. I've had one for about 2 years and it is still in the box so any help in how to use would be great. Take care Stewart. Cheers, Huw

Yes I was, and I would like to see some hollowing with an explanation about how to present the tool to the wood and how to set the gap, mine keeps grabbing, giving me the heebegeebies.

Jonathan, when I started turning the first thing I did was take a course up at Craft Supplies in Miller Dale, Derbyshire. That version of Craft Supplies has gone, the name now belongs to Robert Sorby. My advice these days is to look for a club, big list and map of where they are in the UK then go to the AWGB website www.awgb.co.uk/clubs/ Another suggestion is to find your local woodturning supplier and ask them. If you want to contact me then ask Stewart where to find me.
