Great tutorial! I use scrapers all the time for my turning projects. I'm limited to using only one hand to turn now do to a massive stroke I had three years ago. Scrapers are one of the few tools I can maintain good control of while turning with only one hand. Many thanks my friend! Nathan

Many thanks, the diagram for the scraper above and below the center line helped me a lot. Also backing up the Bowl edge when scraping the inside lip area.

Sam, I watched this one again since I haven't seen it in a while. As a self proclaimed scraper psycho, I have never understood why people say that scrapers don't cut. In your using the knife to demonstrate the point, there is one major difference between the knife and a scraper. The scraper has a burr that does the cutting. Yes, it does slice....

Hi SamI am a regular to your channel. I have just watched a varied selection of your videos that were dealing with problems I was having during turning. This particular one has helped a lot. I have "destroyed" a couple of very nice vessels this week attempting to scrape. I will scrape sometimes now. But I like your rule: scrape with a bowl gouge when you can rather than a scraper to reduce the risk of a catch. I get great results scraping with my gouges. I just thought I should be using the scraper. I have a Richard Raffan DVD and he uses scrapers a lot. That is why I tried to use them more. Really enjoy all your vids and please continue making them. Cheers SamYuval in Vancouver Canada

+Yuval Yeoman There are times when you can't reach an area by scraping with a gouge, so you must use a scraper. Its all risky..... Sam

Thanks for the great video Sam. I have been turning for a couple of years and have not used scrapers----but a lot of sandpaper.! I have tried a scraper following two runs through your video to implant the techniques and I am amazed at the results. Thanks again!

I just got back from the Utah Woodturning symposium and was amazed at the great well know turners who used a scraper. It is a great tool to have in you kit. Sam

Yes, I do shear scrape with a scraper but failed to add it into the video. I try to keep these as short as possible. I started out with 40 minutes and edited out all but 16 or so. And it is very much more "safe" than holding the scraper flat. Thanks Sam

I found that if I put a two or three foot long handle on a scraper, it doesn't catch as easily. If I turn it into a negative rake and use it as an abrader, it just plain works. I have to get desperate to use a scraper though.

bingcro There are two things you can do to make scraping "safer", Make sure the tool rest is raised so the edge of your tool is above center line and yes raise your handle slightly. I think the tool rest position is the more important of the two....Sam

Super video Sam, one of the very best on scrapers. Have you tried shear scraping with a scraper? I was at a demo here a few weeks ago and the guy doing it said he was scraping the inside of a cylinder and dropped the handle to lift the cutting edge as he backed out and discovered he got a lovely finish. I've tried it on bowls and it does seem to work well. The bowls were fairly dry Sycamore and Ash. What I like is that it is not as high-risk (for me anyway) on the inside rim of a bowl.

Yes the glove can be dangerous. I feel that for me it is not or I would not do it. I am careful to keep it away from the chuck or I do not wear it when there are worm holes I can catch the glove on. Some bowls I turn, I turn very thin. I left out shear scraping which is safer than holdng the tool flat. But for thin bowls,I need to back up the wood. Each turner must make their own decisions about safety. I'll put a notation on that part to warn turners.I do thank you for pointing this out. Sam

Should never have on gloves when turning I see a lot of people who do it and like it for different reasons such as the heat protection when sanding and other reason but its very dangerous just as wrapping sand paper around your finger is, if it grabs something it can pull your hand into the rotation and cause many different problems.... as I typed this you stated that gloves are dangerous haha. But still I see to many people do it often when they turn.

Hello Sam - I noticed in this video on negative rake scraping of 7/6/12 you seemed to be turning your lathe on/off using a remote switch on your lathe bed. A friend also does that on his Powermatic 3520B like mine and recently told me his remote switch and/or connection to his Powermatic power supply seem to have gone bad several times in a few months. Powermatic sent him new "internal?" electric connection for the lathe and I wonder if you ever had similar problem. Also, do you use remote switch for all turning?

Bill Weird that you should ask this question. I wired my own switch in with a switch I bought off the internet. You can find a good video on KZbin for the wiring. If you are not comfortable- don't do it, find an electrician. but it is not hard, anyway........I have had two swithes go bad. I don't think it was all caused by dust. I know the second one was just BAD from the beginning. Well I got smart (finally after 64 years) I just wired a wall switch in. It is simple, nothing much to go wrong. Let me know if I can help more. Sam

Sam, I have watched a number of your videos, and this one came up on a discussion about scrapers on Sawmill Creek Forums. I hope you have checked out some of my videos as well. It would be nice if some time we could do a play date. There are many difference in how we use this tool...

+Don-Jo Warren Don I aim for 40-45 degrees on my scrapers. This angle can be aggressive. If it is then remove the burr from the top. Thanks Sam

Hey Sam, What's your opinion on using a Burnisher to sharpen scrapers?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 7 жыл бұрын
LBRG As an old woodworker I think it is a brilliant idea. Burnishing to develop the burr will form a burr that is a finer cutting edge. It will possibly take longer but has some benefits. Sam

I am in the retirement phase of my life. I perform a bit of cabinetry, produce musical instruments, and carry out woodturning in my small shop. I stumbled upon this woodworking guide, “pepe amazing plan” (Google it), and obtained it even though I have numerous woodworking books in the house. The comprehensiveness of this book is unbelievable. It has decent coverage on every subject matter.
