Hello, friends! There will be no resin in today's video, but I think the final product is still something to see! A few months back, a family friend sent me some burls they found on their property while removing some trees. I never did end up finding out what trees they came from, and, as someone who still considers themselves to be a novice at this, I had absolutely no idea what they were. Not only had I never turned a burl before, but I also had no clue what kind of burl I was even working with. However, on the very first pass of the lathe, and as the outer bark came flying off, the strong smell of pine immediately gave it away!
At first, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to finish this project. Although I have turned pine in the past on rare occasions, I've heard from numerous woodturners and read multiple articles advising people to stay away from it. Because of how soft the wood is, it tends to just tear out, and the sap coming out of the wood can also make sanding difficult. Regardless, I decided to press on, and while I certainly did suffer my fair share of tear out, I had absolutely zero problems with sanding, which took care of all my tear out spots.
I know pine isn't everyone's cup of tea (it being construction wood and all), but in the right circumstances, I personally love it, and I love how these two bowls came out. The second one in particular, with the branches running through it, really caught my eye, and I'd be more than happy to work with these pine burls again in the future!

Hello….So I read your comment-no resin, not sure what tree the burl came from, found out it’s pine, but it sounds like it could be tricky, you continue anyway….and you still managed to create 2 beauties….great effort, outstanding results!👌👌👏👏😁😁

My brother gave me a burl a while back and said I should make a kukea out of it. When I opened the box, he started laughing. It's a hickory burl. I've held rocks that didn't feel as solid as this thing. One of these days it will come out of the box. I've got to save up some energy for sharpening. Those bowls look good.

¡Que belleza ver madera clara, una linda veta y un moldeado clásico, sin resinas de colores! Reconozco que las resinas permiten lograr colores e inclusiones atractivas, pero sigo siendo fiel a la madre naturaleza y la madera.
