Woodturning A Segmented Bowl

This is a segmented bowl made out of Purpleheart, with a Chevron pattern made out of Maple, Walnut, and Jatoba. The bowl is 11.25 inches diameter, by 7.5 inches high. There are 130 pieces. The chevron patter is made with long grain. I started this project on January 26, 2015. This video is filmed and edited by me on my iPhone.
This bowl is my second segmented turning and by far the most complicated turning I have made. It has only been 5 months sense I have started properly turning. look forward to more project films and more segmented turning.

Justin, for anyone's age you did an excellent job! You explained what you were doing which is very difficult for some people. You were clear, concise and more to the point, you knew what you were talking about! For someone that has been turning for such a very short period of time you did a fantastic job. The lines on your chevron line up, the segments are the same size. I know a guy that recently tried a chevron pattern and have been turning for 32 years, his segmented bowl was all ver the place like a dogs dinner... You will get comments about this and that, about what you should do and not do. The hardest part is to know who to listen to? It doesn't take an idiot to know that anything with teeth is dangerous and you use caution and no short cuts, and your not an idiot wise you wouldn't be building beautiful bowls. Well done! Justin, really nice bowl you have there. Some advice I'd like to give you, when your video first started you were cutting timber on the table saw and you were using a guard, I thought that's great that someone is finally showing some sense because they are there for a reason, then I see you cutting timber without the guard. As Lou VanDyne stated, FINGERS DO NOT GROW BACK !!!!!!. Your enthusiasm is inspiring, I'd hate for you to have a bad experience and not be able to do what you appear to love doing.

Ross Gabriel Thanks you guys for the concern! the reason i was not using a guard was the segments kept getting stuck against the blade. i know that the risk is high of cutting of fingers. That is why i invested in my heath and safety and bought a Saw Stop. this will give me an extra barrier of protection in that just in case moment. The saw in the video is that saw. I am always conscious to use the most guard as possible( full guard or riving knife) and will continue. I know that I still have to be careful and I still will follow all safety precautions as with any other table saw.

Hey Fella, that’s a fine looking bowl. You have mad skills. I think I got tetanus when I saw your bench plane though. Maybe it was the light or the camera, but that poor piece of equipment could use some steel wool and a little WD-40. Take good care of your equipment and it will last you a lifetime. But once again, that is a superior bowl. Keep making the videos.

I liked the scraper idea. Check the grub screw on the Nova II (top middle pulley on spindle). I've found it can work loose when turn large/heavy stock on a midi lathe.

Really nice work. I would like to caution you though about using the table saw. At 10:40 you cleaned an end grain (cross cutting) against the fence. Not a good or recommended practice. Then when you did rip it, the piece was wider than it was long. Probably would have been safer with a miter gauge. Too easy to get a kick back. Lastly, try to keep at least half of the gullet between the teeth of the blade above the material. It helps the blade disperse heat. You had some serious burn marks on that purple heart. Work safe, you definitely have talent.

Instead of unchucking the bowl each time you added a segmented layer you should get a tapered threaded taper that fits into your tailstock and mount a flat-jawed chuck that you can mount a centered segmented layer using your tailstock to press it to the preceded layer.

I ordered mine from Grizzly. I have a MT-2 taper 8 threads per inch and paid around $30 for it. The flat die centers the segment layer.

If you make all the segments first you can chuck up the flat jaw chuck on the spindle side and dress both sides of all the segment first.
