The ornament looks great. To het it as purple as possible give it a few hours of direct sunlight. This is one of the few woods that has a positive reaction to the sun. As for the parting tool I’m not sure what to tell you. Maybe sharpen it. Maybe try a sharper angle. I’ll go back and look to be sure, but I’m thinking your chuck jaws were open really wide. Even on square stock they don’t seem to get the best grip when open nearly all the way. You did a great job with this ornament. Your skills are elevating quickly.

Thanks Doug! I'm mostly glad she loves it. Not terribly complex, but a challenge none the less. As long as she's happy! 😎

A flying globe, that's different Tim. Turned out looking good though. As for the tear out I tend to use a narrow parting tool on small jobs with the bottom edge ground at a angle. I make two cuts to widen the groove . Just a thought. Stay safe, John

Thanks, I'll give it a try. My thin parting tool is a Robert Sorby fluted parting tool, which actually has a flute on the bottom cutting edge.

That's a nice looking ornament. Nice work Tim. As suggested before you may just need to sharpen the parting tool. Though I did watch Dean over at Dean's woodworking a while ago where he suggested presenting the tool with the point down (basically just underneath the centre line to start the cut and then bring the parting tool up once you have some edges formed. I have tried this and it has worked for me to get some nice clean edges. It may have been his honey dipper video, which I would recommend watching for advice on the parting tool. It will make a lot more sense than me explaining it in a comment.

Regarding the parting tool, I think a lot of it depends on the timber. It's easy to overlook sharpening the parting tool and I did see one video where it was stressed to hone all 4 faces with a diamond card. You can also score the channel with a skew prior to going in with the parting tool.....or just use a vee groove and use the skew! Have a good Christmas Tim!

Oh man, the skew! We still aren't really "friends". 🤣 Thanks for the input, I'll for sure keep it in mind.
