Hi Morningwoodturning... Thank you... I'm glad that you liked it... It is interesting about the different species of trees in different areas... Hi Bill... Thank you... Haha... yes that catch did create a bit of a spiral... I don't do a lot of bowl turning so I lack a bit of experience with the bowl gouge... Beautiful work Andy 👏! Maple is some nice wood to work with. I think I'm going to get some of that wood wax 22. It makes a great shine. I've made my own abrasive paste and polish but it doesn't do that good. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
@AndysCornishCreations2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen... Thank you so much... My 1st time with Maple and I love it... must get some more if I can... Woodwax 22 is a good product but not that dissimilar to basic beeswax polish... I have made abrasive paste.. the 1st batch with diatomaceous earth. Mineral oil and beeswax which was really good... The 2nd batch I thought that I would improve it by adding pummice powder and rottenstone to the mix.. these are finer powders and I thought that I would get a higher shine from them.. I made it more of a paste like consistency which was easier to apply... Unfortunately it was not actually as good as the 1st batch.. why .. I don't know.. I haven't used Yorkshire grit or Acks paste so can't compare... Perhaps 3rd time lucky ... Haha... God bless you and yours... Take care...All the best.....Andy

Hi Andy 👋🏻 What a lovely bowl, the two different finishing treatments both work equally well, I would say… The bottom with the lacquer does seem a bit more glossy but the slight contrast adds even more interest to the piece 👍🏻 The shape and the grain of the maple work beautifully together 😎 and well done with the sanding of the dangerous corners 👏🏻 Looking at the finished bowl, I cannot help but wonder what my porridge would taste like in it… Probably makes your hair stand on end 🤪 Well done, Andy, have a lovely week 🙏🏻😊 Bye from ☀️ Switzerland 👍🏻😉👋🏻 Jude

I’m a newbie since February 2023 when I got my lathe. I’ve noticed that a lot of the people that I tried to teach us movies on simple projects. Use carbide cutters. How much harder is it to do these projects? Would you prefer to learn how to use the gouges? Oh, and by the way, the little bowl is cute I like it.
@AndysCornishCreations Жыл бұрын
Hi Lynda... A lot of new turners use carbide cutters now... they are easier to use and don't need sharpening.. the round ones can be turned around to use a different side of the cutter.. The square one has the 4 sides to use and the diamond cutter has just the2 ends... I quite often use a round carbide cutter for the inside of bowls because I find it easier than the bowl gouge which I tend to get catches with...my fault.. I should practice more using it... Standard woodturning chisels do need to be kept sharp though , so you do need a bench grinder or one of the special sharpening systems ( very expensive).. I use a bench grinder and a gouge jig for sharpening the gouges which can be tricky...scew chisels , parting tools and scrapers are easier , just copy the original angles... Most people start with a chisel set , if you have one then that's great.. practice with them and if you find that you need any more just add them as and when you need them... A standard set can do everything that you will need... All woodturners have way more than they really need...and only use a few on a regular basis.. If you do have set.. then I would recommend adding a round carbide cutter..not essential but handy for difficult bowls... I hope that this helps ... it can be confusing... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
