A very colorful bowl made from Apple wood. This was a scrap piece so I decided I could get the most out of it by making it an end grain turning. Just might be the best way to use a small piece of apple that I have found.

Very nice piece of apple wood. You made a beautiful looking bowl out of it. I was lucky enough to buy a few ( smaller pieces) from a guy and just last week turned my third ever box out of the one piece. I was so amazed at the beautiful colour and grain that appeared as I turned it. I wish I had a big piece like this one. Anyway yet another very educational and fun turning to watch. Thanks .

The heartwood, sapwood and bark in this piece just work in harmony, along with your spectacular finish, to make this a very special bowl. The branch going from the inside, through the rim is just too cool. Great job, Gary! Good job removing that tenon, too! I love to see that and you had it under control all the way to the cutoff point. Fun to watch video, keep'em coming! Phil

Thank you Phil and I knew you would like that branch. Crazy thing is there was 2 pieces of that branch and one ended up in a pile of shavings. But I looked down and found it. WOW! I really love Apple Wood it has so much to offer. I have a couple other videos made where I use your method and on one of them I actually said. "I am proud of myself" Another one was a bit sloppy but still successful. Thanks for watching buddy! I am stacking them up to upload! Gary

Hey Gary, anytime you take something out of the chuck, even if you get it back in the same place, it will wobble. Just over nite makes it wobble. Good video, enjoyed it. I've been using my sand-a-flex and really like it, especially for the inside of the bowl. You take care ole buddy, Larry

Larry you are right it is really hard to get them to run true after removing them. I make a mark on the jaws and the piece but that does not always work out. You will love the sand-o-flex. Really comes in handy. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for your kind words. Take care my friend and see you on your next one! Gary

Beautiful piece, Gary. I love the color. Guess what, I have an apple tree about that size in my back yard that has never produced any good apples. I intended to take it down. Now you've given me the incentive to hurry up.

Thank you Damiano I am glad you like the turning and happy to assist you in the decision to cut down the apple tree. This tree was cut down because of the lack of producing apples as well. I have turned one very green bowl from it and it has equally as pretty grain in it. I really like this end grain bowl. So much of that deep color in it. Thanks again for watching my friend! Gary

You certainly got a beautiful bowl out of that piece of Apple, Gary. I'm just editing the video of an Apple crotch that I turned. Thank you very much Gord. The Apple I turned from this batch has not been real hard. But turned some of it pretty green. I do have a nice crotch piece I am letting dry. Looks really nice!! Great contrast in sapwood and heart. Apple is a lovely looking wood for sure. I've heard it can distort and crack, what's your experience with turning it green Gary? Let us know if this bowl changes shape dramatically in the drying process.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mitch and when turned green and thin you can almost count on it warping. But normally no cracks. You can look up a fairly recent Apple bowl turning I did thin and it warped nicely. Which I wanted. I believe that an end grain turning should not warp because of the shrinking going one way. So yes expect a green one to warp. I have done some and roughed them out to 10% of the diameter for the walls. They warp but then you can return them and they will stay put. Thanks for watching and commenting. Gary

Thank you James I am happy you like it. What I do is mix 2 parts of straight Poly and one part of mineral spirits. Make sure it is mineral spirits and not paint thinner. A lot of people use them the same way. They are close but I have not had good results with paint thinner. You can vary that to your liking. I like it as thin as this makes it. Might take a few more coats but it drys fast and goes on smooth. Thanks again, Gary

Thank you dark I appreciate your comment. I just finished watching your video and your comment popped up for mine. Must be one of those great mind things..lol Basically I mix 2 parts of Poly with 1 part mineral spirits. You can vary it either way but it is pretty thin like this. And drys pretty fast. Don't mix a mix batch because it will gel up on you. I do enough for the turning I am doing. And don't use paint thinner. It is not the same as mineral spirits. Even though I have heard it said that it is. Let me know if you have any more questions on it. Gary
