Mike, just a suggestion, I have cbn wheels and since they are so heavy i always give them a little spin before i turn on the motor in hopes of prolonging motor life. Just a little spin is a major help for the motor to get those heavy wheels spinning.

Hi Mike! What he means is often to find with chopsaws, maybe because it's more dangerous to let them run compared to a grinding wheel. It's actually a switch, that would let turn the wheels the other way round, and if you press it while the wheel ist ending, it causes a slowing down. Got it? Cheers wolfgang

As a former Process Engineer, my job was to determine how to get the most Bang for the Buck. My DYI quick change grinder from 1980 is belt driven and I have set the speed to 1300 RPM. This speed works great for myself. My wheels are mounted on a precision arbor and I can change a wheel in 10 seconds. With only one wheel mounted, the speed up and and turn off time is less than 15 seconds. I see no reason for the start up and stop time to be 100 times greater than the grind time. In the future my plan is to build my version of a quick change Tormek style water grinder. This design will accommodate wheels from 10" to 3". I expect the change over to be less than 30 seconds.

@MikeWaldt9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Vilarino Thanks Daniel. You don't need to have the guards in place as there is no chance of CBN wheels shattering, as they are solid steel. You still have to be mindful while they are spinning down not to touch them :). in the US there are many suppliers as you know, the only thing you must check is the size of your grinders spindle, and ensure you get a solid Aluminium or similar bushing and washer to fit. Let me know how you get on, when you take the plunge. Take care my friend Mike

Avail from Carrols Woodcraft Supplies Australia. I have also fitted one to my variable speed bench grinder and as you say" go easy" on the pressure of the tool against the wheel as it will remove a lot of metal, on the slower wet stone it is a bit less vigorous.

Hi Mike, wee question bro... how do you set up the angles on the one way tool rests before you sharpen?? do you use something like the Raptor angle sets?? it's the only drawback i see in that set up compared to a sorby pro edge ... although i have a new 2 inch roughing gouge and near impossible to get it sharpened exactly on pro edge... your thoughts and wisdom, especially on the 2 inch is very welcome brov.... R.
@MikeWaldt5 жыл бұрын
Hi Rodney, once I set the leg angle to my liking ... many years ago ... i never change it for any of my gouges. To ensure repeatability I made a few wood "stops" of the length needed to have the basket at the exact position needed for each type of tool. Also I don't have to worry about reducing wheel diameter as the CBNs don't wear down. As far as your 2" SRG, simply extend the basket as needed to allow the bevel to fully ride the wheel, marking with a sharpie is a great way to check where micro adjustment is needed, and away you go :) Hope this answers your questions. Cheers Mike

Okay Mike, I think I am on the correct video now... There is at least 1 'cleaning' stick for these wheels on the market. It is aluminum oxide, similar to but harder than the white grinding wheels. If you should happen to load up your CBN wheels by grinding the softer/non hardened steels on them, this stuff will clean it up fairly well. It does send up a lot of white dust though. I used one on my wheels which seem to be almost black from all the sludge from my sloppy wet wood I turn. It didn't effect the cutting ability of the wheels at all. It did make them look a lot cleaner though. Thanks for the plug Mike.

As for slowing the wheels down after you've switched the machine off I wonder if you could manually switch in a huge power resistor? Again, a great video MIke and I learned alot of info from it! Thanks sooo much! One question though, did you mention that the CBN wheels are NOT to be used to sharpen 'Carbide Tools'? What about the replaceable carbide cutters that we use for turning, planers, etc. (i.e.; small rectangular, round, triangular tips...) that we many wood turners use vice regular spindle/bowl guages? Since I use both, I was hoping that the CBN wheels would also sharpen those replaceable tips also... Again, thanks so much for all you do and your wonderful videos!

Hi Mike and many thanks for the review, it's very topical in turning right now so spot on. I'm doing some research for members new to our turning club where we're going to run a practical workshop to help get them setup with sharpening using a dry grinder. I note in your presentation you opted for the RP 8" model after you yourself had researched the choices. Can I ask you to specify what it was about that particular grinder that made you choose it please? My intention in running this workshop is to recommend a total solution to our members and I want to be able to justify the proposed grinder. So your perspective on why you chose it would be helpful. Thanks again.

Hi Mike. Only just started looking at sharpening clips hence the late comment. 1. I notice that you, and others, are running your CBN wheels unguarded. Do you consider this totally safe? 2. I am thinking of running my grinder with a 40mm aluminium oxide wheel one end and a CBN the other - so I can 'cut' carbon and HS steel. Any thoughts? Thanks again for your very informative presentations. Best wishes, Philip.
@MikeWaldt6 жыл бұрын
Hi Philip, I have since changed grinder and do have partial guards on as they had to be cut to accommodate my sharpening system, and I kept them to trap some of the "swarf". But in answer to your first question - I personally feel it is safe to run CBNs without guards, as they are not going to shatter. However if you keep one aluminium oxide wheel, a guard should be in place on that one, as they rarely do, but can chip and shatter. As far as running both on one machine, I see no problem with that at all. Let me know what you end up doing. Cheers Mike
@philiphamilton14796 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. Many thanks for your thoughts on guarding grinding wheels. Have to admit I do not favour unguarded rotations machinery, but agree your comments on leaving the CBN wheel unguarded and the necessity for guarding a 'stone' wheel. With careful alignment I have managed to put my 40mm stone on the righthand side of the grinder (designed for a 25mm wheel) but am thinking it would probably be better to swap the CBN and stone wheels to ensure better clearances. Having already heavily modified the guards I now need to get another rest for use with the stone and am looking at the Sorby unit. I am trying the Woodcut jig on the CBN wheel. Again, my thanks for your assistance.

Mike, Great review with very useful background materials! I have been using my CBN wheel (I only bought the 120 grit) for over a year now and I am very satisfied. I find that I have not been eager to buy the second wheel since my 6 inch grinder seems fairly well balanced with an aluminum oxide wheel on the other side. Also, that grit seems to be perfect for most everything I do. The disadvantage is that the 6 inch wheel does put a more concave grind on my gouges and probably eats up more metal as a result. My wheel is also from D-Way and was quite reasonable in price compared to the 8 inch wheel. One thing you might have pointed out is that the new set up you have is fairly pricey. I don't know what the current exchange rate is (pounds sterling to dollars) but a new grinder and two wheels would be about $500-600 in the States. I have also found that a light touch is a good approach. It makes sharpening more accurate and avoids grinding off more metal than necessary. You do get a very fine metal dust beneath the wheel as a result of sharpening. I vacuum it up to avoid spreading it into the air. There are other shapes to the CBN wheels (round shoulders versus flat) and finishes (no plating/CBN grit on the sides of the wheel). Not sure what the relative trade-offs are since they weren't known to me at the time I bought. Thanks for another in a long line of very professional and useful videos. Please keep up the effort. I appreciate it and I know there are many others who do as well. I also appreciate your candor and honesty of approach. It is great to know that there are no underlying motives other than sharing your experience. Sheldon

Hi Mike Excellent video as always. I see you've changed your sharpening set up from the Tru Grind in your sharpening video to the Wolverine system. In your opinion is the Wolverine better? great review Mike i have my eye on these a good while might be the next shiny thing i buy the only thing is i have 3 grinders lol and that means ill have to buy 6 wheels did you sell your old stone and grinder or is that the same grinder Thanks Robbie
@MikeWaldt9 жыл бұрын
Robbiethewoodturner Thanks Robbie. I kept the old Ruby stones and grinder for carbon steel, and any other grinding I need to do, as nothing other than My HSS tools are going anywhere near these wheels ;). I got another Record Power 8" grinder for the CBNs, it's a bit underpowered for the weight of the wheels, but once up to speed it works well, I'll have to see how long it stands up to the extra weight. Take care mate Mike PS - THREE grinders!!!!!!! lol
@rogerwilliams50207 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. I notice your grinder is running fast. Probably 3450 or whatever it is. Don't the CBN wheels work better at 1750? Yours seems scary fast. I'm a newbie and starting to source a grinder and wheels.

CBN not recommeneded for carbide? i'm not a woodworker, im a machinist, and we use them on carbide.
@MikeWaldt9 жыл бұрын
+meocats Hi and thanks for the input. I was told a while ago that 180 grit or 240 grit CBN are too coarse for carbide cutters, that's why I suggest not to use them. I have always honed them with a 600 grit diamond hone, as the carbide could clog the wheel. But, I am not saying you are wrong, especially if you do it in a professional capacity with obvious success. Thank you for giving me food for thought. As a matter of interest, what grit of wheel do you use for your carbide, thanks in advance. Cheers Mike

Mike ... I just watched your two-part live stream of the hollow form ... great video! Glad you have a customer!! I'm not sure that you actually get comments this far in the rear-view mirror. This CBN video was very helpful, and the specs of the available wheels which you described are not readily available in North America, from my research ... in particular, the 1 1/2" surface ... however, The ToolPost went out of business in September 2020 (surprising given that all of their customers would have been trapped inside ... maybe health issues with the proprietors?) ... their website links on to a follow-on site for products, but it's a pen turners site and they don't seem to carry the wheels ... was there an underlying brand on those wheels that you could point me to? (dangling participle only one of many things that sag with age!) ...Thanks, your humble subscriber, Farmer John, Ontario, Canada

Thank you John much appreciated. Regarding the CBN wheels the ones I had where Optigrind, Woodcut are available at Axminster Tools here in the UK, and they deliver worldwide, also Amazon and EBay are a good source too. Hope this helps Cheers Mike

This is by far one of the funniest videos to watch using "closed captioning"! Go back and choose the 'cc' button next to the settings button on the video itself, sit back and enjoy, you will be on the ground laughing soon enough. Whoever typed out Mikes words completely butchered it but in hilarious fashion, non-stop. If you do this please share you're favorite "cc" as a reply to my comment. For example, as I write this I look up to find one and what I see is..."spectacle a smile on the rachel"...yeah idk but super wrong and these gems are throughout the whole vid. Enjoy, Mike you get my first "like" ever given on youtube!! Congrats, LOL.

Thank you Mike The video has been a great help, I also have the Record 8" grinder and got one CBN wheel for now, I too got it from Toolpost, I got a leaflet with mine showing how to fit the wheel, the washer (special flange) as it's called, which you put on just before the nut, should go on first, before the wheel, by the motor, and the original Record Power flange goes on the recessed side, I am not saying your way is wrong, just that this is what it says on the leaflet Pat
@MikeWaldt7 жыл бұрын
Hi Pat, and thank you for pointing this out to me. I must have got it wrong. However I have a slow speed grinder now with a different arbour set up, but once again thanks for the input my friend. Cheers Mike
@patrickdunne49757 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, I have a few questions if you don't mind, why did you change to a slow speed grinder, is it better, and which grit CBN wheels do you have on the new set up. Cheers Pat
@MikeWaldt7 жыл бұрын
I just felt that the grinder was not powerful enough for the weight of the wheels Patrick, and was offered an early Christmas present from my wife, so I just couldn't refuse :). The wheels are the same as were on the old grinder, so the grits are the same as in the video. Hope this answers your question sufficiently. Cheers Mike
@patrickdunne49757 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike That is a great help, I have decided to get a second wheel and I am also thinking of getting a more powerful slow speed grinder as the wheels are quite heavy, and keeping the record for other work, this one seems a good bet and the shaft is 32mm 1 1/4" so I would not need a bushing, what do you think www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-trade-series-at8srg2-slow-running-grinder-505195

Hello Mike! It looks like you got your self a good grinding system there but i have to recommend the Tormek system to you and all other wood turners, I got the Tormek T4 a few months ago even before I started wood turning myself (been doing it for about 1 week now :) and i just love it) The Tormek system has all the jigs you can ask for and works like a dream for almost all cutting edge tools, when using the leather honing wheel after shapening you will get an edge that shines like a mirror belive me at first I was stunned by the results on all my tools and I have been sharpening tools for ages and never got it that good before. The only backside of it is that it´s a bit pricy, the T4 i got costs about 250 pounds and their flagship the T7 about 450 pounds excluding all the jigs that comes on the side, but the jigs are not to expensive. I do recommend this system not just because I´m form sweden myself (wich the Tormek is too) but because i´m so pleased with it. Ok Mike keep sharp and keep turning safe! /Tom
@MikeWaldt9 жыл бұрын
Tom Plomin Thanks Tom. I considered the Tormek, and have for some time. But, I decided on the CBN route. I think most systems offer good results, it is all down to personal preference at the end of the day. I think if you ask 10 people which sharpening system is the best, you'll get 10 different answers. Thanks for the information, and watching and commenting. Happy turning, and sharpening. Take care Mike
@toplom19 жыл бұрын
Mike Waldt I agree with you there if you ask 10 people which sharpening system is the best you´ll get propably more than 10 different answers :) but in the end it´s all about what makes you happy. By the way Mike your clips on KZbin made me want to get in to wood turning so I will stay tuned for more of your clips, you´r an inspiration and a really good mentor.... so to speak. Keep up the good work and maby some day i will get the courage to "tube" my own video :)

Best wishes, Albert, Anthony oops! sorry Alan (I think).

I'm going to assume that you bought these before Stephen Ogle came up with his diamond sharpening system. I personally have sent for five of the disks he is using. I have a 100, 150, 320, and 3 more that were sent as gifts from the company for ordering from them. They are 500 grit, 5000 grit and 15000 grit. I haven't bought Steve's plans because I've found that they are perfect on the Worksharp 3000 which I already own. I an using an MDF board with a little adjustment to fit on the WS 3000. Bill Bidel
