Very useful Mike. I have the Sorby pro, but it shouldn't too difficult to adapt this method to a belt grinder. One problem though, KZbin now insists on recommending for me videos on how to file my fingernails and other ways to make them pretty, it's opened up a whole new world for me :-)

Hi Mike, Just had to say, I reshaped my bowl gouge to fingernail profile and what a difference it makes. That standard grind is bloody awful! If i even thought about picking it up i'd get a catch, but with the fingernail grind it's like a whole other tool. I'm probably gonna change my spindle gouges too. thanks very much!

Great video and its a technique Il use but as I understand you dont quench HSS - which is what most modern tools are made of as it damages the steel. Carbon steel is different from memory.

Hi Bryan. 1: I have about 2" of "stick out", and that remains the same for what ever tool I sharpen. It's not so much the measurement, it is the same amount of protrusion each time that is the key to consistency. 2: The set up of the Vari Grind holder again is personal preference, a bit of experimentation is needed to achieve the "sweep" you are looking for with your gouges.I have never moved mine since I had it and was happy with the result. i use the same set up for all my gouges, the only variable is the baket distance for the wheel, I made some wood spacers that allow me to locate the same distance for each type of gouge I sharpen. Hi Jase. the grind is one I prefer as it allows me to make more aggressive cuts if needed. The wings are similar on both my bowl gouges abd spindle gouges ... but the angles are very different ...45° for the SG and 55° for the bowl gouge. Thanks for watching Cheers Mike

@@MikeWaldt We bought two Axmister 8”x1-1/4x40 wide CBN wheels and had to send one off them back to the dealer here 🇸🇪it was not balanced well and did not run true i really wonder why Axmister makes their wheels in Steel and not in Aluminum we have a Swedish 200x 50 mm“Reki”wheel on left side and a 40 mm Axmister Evolution on the right it takes around 15 min to get stopped 🛑😝

Great video, Mike. Ive just got some of the Hope double ended gouges and the finger nail end needs sharpening. Are. there any specific measurements I need to consider when using the vari-grind method as I noticed that you only had a short amount of the gouge through the vari-grind and the stop bar was already set to a specific distance. Am new to wood turning so I apologise if my question appears a stupid question. Keep up the great work though. Love your videos and work.

Hi Duncan ... there is no such thing as a stupid question in my view :) I use the recommended 2" (25mm) for the blade protrusion, this gives me consistent results every time. Also I use the same angle on the vari grind jig for all my gouges for the same reason. Once you are happy with what you achieve, keep everything the same for all gouges, that's a personal opinion of course. Then I make wooden stops for the basket arm, which gives me my preferred bevel angle on each tool. Hope this helps. Cheers Mike

Hi Mike, another great video and I enjoy every new one that comes my way being a subscriber. I'm fairly new to turning and have done all carbide until recently. I just bought bought some Thompson Tools traditional tools: 5/8" & 1/2" bowl gouges along with a 1/2" spindle gouge & a 3/8" detail spindle gouge. I bought the Wolverine & Verigrind like you have along with the Raptor set up jigs which go from 35, 40, 45, 50 & 60 degrees. Raptor said to use 2" and set the Verigrind leg at 23 degrees or about the second notch on the Verigrind. I see you have your Verigrind leg set at about the 4th notch (similar to Doug Thompson's recommendation). You mentioned in an answer to another question that you used 2 sticks to reset the "basket" length away from the wheel when you wanted to regrind your tools. Can I assume this distance sets the nose angle such as 60 degrees that you mentioned you like for your bowl gouges? Could you please measure those various sticks for length and let me know what they are for the various different nose angles you have set up. Also please advise where you have the Verigrind leg set as it was kind of hard to tell for sure from the video. Also, it seems like you achieve a longer swept back grind by a "deeper" roll over of the Verigrind and a more "traditional grind using less rollover ...correct? Would it be possible to regrind a tool or for that matter grind a totally unground tool by setting the Wolverine basket with your stick to the nose angle required. Then use the Verigrind until you get what ever profile desired vs grinding the nose & the top first? I suppose having the top ground ahead of time it gives you a reference of where to stop your Verigrind rolling motion...I think? Please advise and Thanks for your help!! Myles

It is a very personal choice. Both systems are very good, I have just decided that I prefer the CBN set up.

Thanks Mike. I liked the idea of longevity of the CBN when and the wolf system looks user friendly. The only thing I have a concern with is that there doesn't seem a way to set the wolf system up to a set angle eg 45 degrees or 55 degrees. You always need to use a gouge and a sharpie of something pre existing of that angle, if that makes sense Any way thanks again great review

Thanks Adam, I use the same setting on the fingernail attachment, but the bevel angles are different. 35° for the spindle gouge, and about 60° for the bowl gouges.

Sorry lots of questions and if I am going to invest would like to understand from an expert. Would you go for a standard and fine? Rim and face or just rim? Also I notice you use the Axminster grinder, they do not appear to have the 18mm bushings?

I am confused...you said you set the distance from the grinder..with what or what distance..explain..with a rapture?

Hi Terry, I say the correct distance from the wheel to replicate the angle of the gouge I already have ground to that angle. Merely offer the correctly ground gouge to the wheel and set the basket distance, then grind the "new" gouge to the same shape and angle. Thanks for the question and watching. Cheers Mike

Good tutorial Mike! I use the varigrind also and even as an amateur, I have produced some impressive (to me anyway) edges that cut really well! WhY lathe do you have there? That's a beast of a machine!
