Thanks to each who commented on my last post. There were a lot of great ideas. Many focused on using a band saw. For this video, I show changes to the original jig for the table saw plus some examples for cutting rings on the lathe and bandsaw.
Each approach has its own strengths and limitations.
Table saw:
Can handle large and small ring sizes.
Slight limitation due to segment width vs saw height.
Takes a wide kerf depending on saw blade.
Band saw:
Narrow saw kerf
Jig and saw capacity limit larger ring sizes.
Lathe
Capacity limitation is moot since the lathe capacity limits ring size anyway.
Requires some form of mounting
For some techniques, I paid a visit to Frank Young, who has been a guest previously on this channel.
Splitting on the lathe:
I demonstrate an unsupported cut risking the ring breaking.
Frank demonstrates cutting while the offset is held securely
Splitting on a bandsaw:
Frank demonstrates his jig for safely and accurately cutting on the band saw.
Splitting on a table saw.
I show updates to my jig for additional safety while cutting on the table saw.
Which technique is best? That depends on your equipment, your project, your skill level. Best of all is to have a variety of techniques available to choose from and to adapt to different circumstances.
Some sources:

Very good video, I like the bandsaw chuck holder jig. I made one several years ago and find it indispensable in keeping my fingers away from a blade. I found that one can get 1 1/4-8 threaded rod easily and inexpensive ($6.00) at a bolt supply store but ask for a 1 1/4" flange "STUD". Then one can cut it into shorter lengths for making chuck mount adaptors. Flange studs come in different lengths but the commonly used size for a standard flange is pretty common. 1 1/4 -8 nuts are commonly available there as well.

Thanks Bert for that 1 1/4-8 info. 1x8 are common but I have had trouble with 1 1/4-8. Alan

If you ask for a bolt it is likely to be 1 1/4-7tpi which is typical for bolts. Flange Studs used in many industrial applications are 1 1/4-8tpi, the average woodturner wouldn't know that unless they come from an industrial workplace career. I re-watched the video and noticed that you did bring the tailstock up to catch the ring but it wasn't running at speed, I usually make a larger diameter dummy tail center from wood to catch the ring so,it doesn't drop to far off center when it's cut free. I have also done what Frank did with a chuck mounted on my live tail center ( I have a 3/4-10 to 1 1/4-8 adaptor ). As always, many ways to accomplish a task, the challenge is finding which one works for the task at hand, it is always good to have options.

Nice jig that gets a good result while addressing the risks associated with the table saw. That being said, I’ve found that parting multiple rings off on the lathe is so fast that I’ve never thought of doing it any other way. The two other options certainly make sense and have been stored away for future reference. Thanks always for sharing!

As we all know, many ways to get a job done. All these work, just depends on, as you said, what tools you have and where your level of confidence is. Thanks for showing us these options. Personally I'd go with the bandsaw option. I do like the way you can go from saw to lathe quickly and easily. Just have to build a jig now. Well, add it to the list.

I now have a better appreciation for your table saw jig. And the band saw jig is impressive too. I also use the lathe method. Lots of options. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay healthy.

It is always great to see several different ways of doing the same thing. A thought is to cut a notch in one of your kerf savers so it can sit around the mounting bolt. Thanks for all the videos.

Great information, I use the table saw with the infinity thin kerf 10” saw blade
@AsWoodTurns
@AsWoodTurns 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the drawback to the table saw is the kerf. Thin is great. Thank you Alan

Alan; One thing I do is Celtic Knot pens. To keep the kerf as narrow as possible, I use a 7-1/4" circular saw blade (kerf .074). You must go slowly as the blade will "sing" if you push it too fast. I'm not sure if your Sawstop saw will work with the smaller blade. It did not work with the Sawstop saw at the local Woodcraft.

Lots of good info Alan! Frank does some beautiful work. My band saw isn't all that great (Craftsman 12 inch. Only 6 inch height of cut) but the table saw and cutoff on the lathe: Yep. Gotta remember those methods. Thanks!

Nice video Alan. On your first cut off..it would be best to put your chuck in the tailstock with a dowel or rod of some sort put thru the piece to catch the separated piece....thank you for your videos and happy 2021!👍🏻👍🏻

I think that is about the same as bringing up the live center to catch the ring. Better yet is the tail stock live center. Alan

@@AsWoodTurns not really...a small rod thru the center ..the piece will separate without flailing around like it did..I do the same when parting on my metal lathe..the live center put the parted piece back into the spinning piece you just cut from. up to you...been doing that way for many years...happy 2021.

I take it the segment rings are just glued to a waste block when using the lathe? It would be nice to see the way he mounts them and I assume he trues them up after mounting?

Great video, I have been wanting to make a jig to mount my chuck (1 1/4-8) on the bandsaw. I could not find a reducer on pen state's web site for 1 1/4-8 to anything. Would you ask Frank for more information?

@@RedJeepClub That is a 1 1/2 inch adaptor to 1 1/4 ID. Maybe I was not specific enough I need a 1 1/4 OD to 1 ID 8 tpi adaptor. The OD needs to screw into my 1 1/4-8 chuck. Sorry for confusion.
