Nice work Simon, I realize the video is a couple of years old and you have probably discovered a lot of new procedures to make salt and pepper mills. I work for one of the national woodworking stores in Florida and teach both Basic turning and pepper mill turning classes. I have a few tips I would like to share with you on how I prepare and turn mills. I have written a 15 page step by step instruction booklet (that I share with customers and students) and have sent a copy to your email. You are definitely very talented and hope the info may give you some ideas. One of the main tips I would like to share publicly is that you should drill the holes for the pepper corn storage (usually 1-1/16" hole) and the 9/32" hole in the top before shaping these parts. These holes should be used as references in order to make sure the holes are centered in the base and especially the top tenon. Use jam chucks on the head stock and a 60 Deg cone live center in the tail stock. This will assure that the top will turn true and NOT elliptical when grinding the pepper corns. Hope the info helps, as you know, "Ask 100 turners how to do something and you will get 102 different answers." Keep up the great work Thanks again for a nice video.

I agree with you, Simon -- the shape needs work but the wood is really pretty. And Jf L's comment below about ebonising made me laugh out loud too :-) Are you familiar with the splitting froe? If not, it's a straight blade used to split wooden shingles or staves from a log. I use one to take log sections down to round(er). They are expensive to buy, but any smith can make you one out of an old lawnmower blade or leaf spring. A froe and a honking big wooden mallet are what you need, my friend. Clyde

Great look! Have you thought about changing the entire look of the typical grinder? Maybe a grinder with a curvy big belly to hold the salt or pepper? Would be shorter but the different angles you can create is limitless! Also, if you don't like the dyed look of the top, you could try a different wood for some contrast. It's still an amazing piece Simon!!! Great job!

You can use a little hatchet to remove some of the bark and rough wood and round it off more. Very dangerous doing it like you do. The wood looked surprisingly nice. That stuff normally isn't even good firewood. Experiment with some light stains to bring out the grain a little more. They might be able to helo at the paint store. I thought the base was too narrow. It looked top-heavy. Where did you get the mill hardware?
