I started turning this vase shortly after receiving it in a club wood raffle. It was still wet. It seemed to be perfect for a hollow form turning. I rough turned the outside and hollowed it while still green.
After coating it with a PVA based wood sealer from Craft Supplies USA, I let it dry for about 18 months. I weighed it periodically to assess how much moisture had been lost.
Remounting a dry but warped project is always part of the challenge. In this case I had placed a scrap disk over the entry to the inside to limit air movement. This now served as a tenon while I recut a tenon on the base.
Then on to cut off the sealer and trim the hollow form to final shape. I wanted a smooth curve.
In this case I used a sanding pad to remove the last of the nub on the bottom. I put the sanding pad in a #2 Morse taper collet sized to the pad's shaft. Then a drawbar holds the collet securely to the spindle. This works better than a Jacobs chuck in the spindle.
This vase is finished with walnut oil.It measures about 6 inches in diameter and 5 inches tall.
Enjoy!

As always, I enjoyed your video. I would have liked to see at least some of your hollowing, however. Just to see what you used. Keep those videos coming they are always entertaining and informative.

I have some magnolia wood from a tree I cut down for a Sister in our church, she was tired of cleaning up it's mess before she would mow. It very pretty wood grain; most of it is drying now, I've have rough turned 4 blanks into bowls and prepared them to dry in shavings and bag. It's hard wood even wet and has a grain looks lake the white ash grain with a little bit of dark purple. I've heard that this wood doesn't crack or split much; do you know anything about this wood? Thanks

Sorry, no experience with magnolia. Maybe others can share their experience. Meanwhile, work your current plan. Dry it sloooooowwwwwllllllyyyyy. Alan

Did you hollow through the small opening? Or did you cut and re glue the bottom and hollow from there?

This one was hollowed through the small opening but I enjoy the other way more. Alan

Do you do most of your hollow forms in wet wood first, do you ever do dry? or does that just take to long, What amount of thickness do you leave for drying if wet wood regardless of type of wood that is wall thickness after hollowing.. Thanks.
@AsWoodTurns
@AsWoodTurns Жыл бұрын
It depends! :) I do both. For wet, I only rough turn the exterior. The interior is only roughly hollowed to expedite drying. I want to leave enough to accommodate the warp but also to allow for final design. It will be months, so leaving plenty of wood keeps design options open. Alan

Great hollow form. Just a question, did you re-turn the inside any or was the first the only turning inside this piece?
@AsWoodTurns
@AsWoodTurns 3 жыл бұрын
Essentially, only the 1st time. There was a little ledge accessible that would distract a woodturner that I did cut away. Other than that, no one can feel or inspect the inside anyway. Alan

@@AsWoodTurns Hi Alan, I guess you haven’t seen the neat little bore cameras that attach to your cell phone just so you can check on your woodturning buddies. 😉 Even though you didn’t sand to 400 on the inside, the outside looks good. Thanks for the video and the hint of gluing a “dry” plug (future tenon) to keep the inside from drying too fast resulting in possible cracks. Cheers, Tom
