You make me so jealous sometimes. Lol I have been turning now for about two months, everyday. I'm in love. I have made two 55 gal garbage cans of sawdust. 😅 not much else😢😢 haha you make it look so easy, thank you for you tutelage and expertise in your turning. I'm 72 and wanted to do this all my life. But have been too busy in life to do it. Ha. I have made a few mushrooms and candel holders but as of yet unable to successfully make a bowl 🥣. They still seem to be still be just out of my reach. I continue to blow out the sides. ( In a terrible way)😢 lol keep up your wonderful work, you inspire me. Respectfully Lary
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Жыл бұрын
I love reading this comment, Lary. Not because you have yet to turn a bowl but because of your determination to keep trying. I may make it look easy but I can tell you, in the beginning, I had wood flying everywhere! Huge catches, I even broke the banjo on my old Delta lathe from having the gouge slam down hard on the tool rest. I nearly gave up! Then one day, it all just came together. All that practice just worked. Now it feels so natural to me, I just can't believe it. I've got a few years on you so, don't let that get you down. You've got this! 😄

I Anchor sealed it because it is literally dripping sap but after watching you video I can hardly wait until next year to turn some of it all the pieces I have are very similar to what you just turned. But it gets better I had another neighbor cut his avocado tree down and have 4 pieces of that for next year - great video thank you for sharing!!

Holly Cow Phil that is one great piece of wood. The shape is really nice. Having it curve back in at the top really gave the perfect look with the live edge. That is a stunning design! And the finish you sure put the shellac on nicely. You got me laughing with the "Don't just jam it in there you big stupid" Another fantastic turning from Dave's stash of wood. Thanks Dave for sending that. Gary

I have a 4x4x10 inch spindle blank left from the heart of the trunk. Twisted a bit as it seasoned. I'll eventually get a vase out of it. A lot of "magic wand" blanks, some spalted stuff, as well. Wood just comes to me! Some days it falls out of the sky!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
I'm sooo fortunate, Gary, that viewers like Dave are willing to share their stash with me. Don't forget, you have sent me some great wood, too! And, yeah, I was a little surprised at that little whoops of mine! Thank you buddy, I really appreciate your time watching and commenting, it means a lot to me! Phil

Howdy, Tom! Thank you so much! Once you start turning the natural stuff it's really hard to go back. I've found full round, plain bowls very intimidating because they depend on ME for design rather than just going with what mother nature had in mind. Best wishes for successful turnings! Phil

As always when I send you a piece of wood and then have the wonderful opportunity to not only watch you turn it, but also get to hear (and this is more important to me) *why* you turned it a particular shape, I have to say: Thank YOU, sir! for giving back so freely! I can't help but send you more! (and I shall! oh, yes, I truly shall. still down-sizing frantically!) By the way, this holly tree's trunk is another close-to-home find that has it's own story. Would be happy to share that story should anyone be interested.

Excellent show today Phil, I really enjoyed it...Thank You Calmwood Creations ...tm.

Nice bowl! I like the shape. Holly doesn't have much grain, but it finishes so beautifully to a mirror shine, so it is great when you want to focus more on form than flash. I've really enjoyed turning it, but unless you have connections to an urban arborist (or people who send you wood in the mail!) it's impossible to find. Thanks to Dave and Tuffy and the others who keep you supplied so you can spend your time making great videos instead of hunting down wood.

Beautiful finish on that Phil. Love the shape of it too. Sanding these shapes is tough. But I've got an idea running around in my head, that I think will make sanding these natural edge bowls much easier. Once I put it together, I'll let everyone in on it. Mark

I am looking forward to your idea on the sanding Mark. I just finished a winged vase that was a devil to sand. Gary
