Al; That method of re- re- mounting the bowl to finish the bottom is something I need to learn. I tried it twice on almost finished bowls, and launched them for a tour of the shop. I guess the friction pad/block that I had on the head stock side was wrong, as the dang things both shimmied out from between centers. I keep the broken parts on my bench to remind me.....

Well done again Al. Here in Western Australia we have similar looking timber which is called Sheoak (a native) which comes in varying colours from pale pink through to a very dark almost brown, like your piece. When it is matched with something like a rich jarrah or a pale olive wood it makes for an interesting contrast. Thank you..

Always a treat to see your work. You are a treasure to watch. During the texture band part, would it have been better to have the lathe speed slower so that the texture would not stumble and cancel itself?
@AlFurtado4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The texture tool is something that varies a lot Sometimes I get a nice clean cut at a reasonable fast freed other times I get multiple lines still figuring out that tool LOL Take care be safe.

Man this video helps so much being able to hear your thought process, watching your tool angles, etc. Thank you! Question, since i know you use a variety of quality of tools.... how much does the cut quality vary with cheapness of gouge? As a beginner i say my best cut leaves me starting around 100 grit sanding. I'm using a hurricane bowl gouge.... would a higher quality tool help me get a better finishing cut or do I just need to keep practicing?
@scruffy61514 жыл бұрын
I don't see Al using the high dollar ones that much mostly his habor freight.
@AlFurtado4 жыл бұрын
Me use quality tools? are you confusing me? I used the hurricane 99% of the time and the rest is a HF tool LOL A good sharp edge from top notch or cheap give you the same finish the difference at times is how often you might need to sharpen and I am not so sure about that either.
@BradsWorkbench4 жыл бұрын
@@AlFurtado i said a variety of quality OF tools, meaning tools varying in quality which is why i thought you were the perfect person to answer the question 🤷♂️

I would suggest not using a paper towel to apply finish. I don't know what type of finish you are using but I would suggest a lint-free shop towel.
@AlFurtado3 жыл бұрын
Rule number 1. Never use cloth on a lathe. If it gets caught it could pull you hand in. Paper towel will tear away from you
@shrimuyopa81173 жыл бұрын
@@AlFurtado Yah the blue lint free shop towels aren't really a cloth. They break apart just as easily as a paper towel does, they just do not leave little bits of paper in your finish like a paper towel would.

Al, I am not criticizing you but the one thing that everyone preaches is safety! You really need to do the same! NO mask or face shield? You are sanding Lacewood and inhaling any and all wood dust is hazardous to your health! And Lacewood is a skin irritant! So for YOUR safety and that of others please start wearing a mask and face shield in your videos! You are a major motivation and influence on a lot of people including me, and safety first should be something that you preach and practice, best way to do so is lead by example! PLEASE don’t take this as an insult! Also, in so far as being more experienced with the lathe, the old saying is familiarity breeds contempt. Worrying about you and your safety has nothing to do with safety.. I just want to keep on watching you and your videos! Ormond Fine Fractal Art & Custom Woodworking.. Stephen!
@AlFurtado4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching my friend and you concern I will let everyone preach the safety I will say I know I lack in the air quality often and I have to work on that but the face shield? If I am not wearing it I am in any danger of the piece striking me in the head. Now on the crotch or hands that is a different story. Please do not take offence to this, Be safe and healthy
@stephendsurowitzormondfinf44904 жыл бұрын
Al, No problem I am just concerned because of the amount of influence you have on a lot of people. And the only reason for a face shield is not only flying objects but it will also cut down on some of the particulate matter you are injesting that’s all. Just worried about your health and others! Turn on brother you are very enjoyable! Thanks!!
