Woodturning - log to vase
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a sycamore log into a contemporary style vase.
when woodturning a piece like this I like to take away layers until I see what shape the wood wants to be and which part of the wood is going to have the best effect, this is what i find so enjoyable about woodturning.
this vase was turned to an even wall thickness from a freshly cut green log.the wall thickness is around 5mm and the photos at the end of the video is the bowl after drying. I like the simplicity of this form. it doent get much more simple than this.. log to vase

thank you. that is a power chisel or reciprocating chisel, it is an attachment for a rotary tool like a dremel. cheers for following along. 👍🏻

Beautiful vase ❤️ Could I ask the moisture level of the vase when you started?

Thank you. The log was fresh cut, early spring, so I’d guess around 50-60% moisture content, I got a good shower while turning it so very wet. 😆

@@JackMackWoodturning I thought it looked green. How do you stop it splitting? Mine are driving me mad. 😩

Even wall thickness is the key.. if you imagine the wood mass has a certain amount of force it exerts on the over all piece as it drys and contracts, a thicker section will create uneven force and there for a weaker point else where.. it’s way more complicated than that.. but as a general rule.. turn walls even and thin if possible, have smooth and even transition between walls and base.. and let the piece dry slowly. Finishes will also slow the drying. You’ll always have cracks, but this will help you have less.
