Great bowl Chad. Love the new shop orientation or camera angle!

Thanks for noticing! I've slowly decluttered and rearranged the shop to be better suited for shooting videos. Now I just need to get back on track with them... I hope you're having a great new year so far! Thanks for watching, as always!

That's a nice bowl =) I need to get myself one of those sanding sponges for the lathe. Takes forever hand-sanding the inside of bowls! =D Happy turning, cheers Henning

Thanks! Hand sanding... yikes! I have a video on how I make a couple of my sanding accessories. Check it out... kzbin.info/www/bejne/foLJY2WMac2qmq8

Hi Chad Nicely done. Turning spalted stuff can be tricky. What do you use as a sanding sealer?
@ChadEamesWoodWorks3 жыл бұрын
I use Minwax Professional Formula sanding sealer. It's white, so it doesn't give wood that amber tint most other sealers do. Thanks for watching!

That's a beautiful bowl Chad. Didn't actually know ash would spalt. Do all woods? Or do we just notice it on lighter colors woods? I notice you use the j shaped rest inside the bowl. Do you prefer this shape to the c shaped curved bowl rest? If so, why? I'd like to buy a rest for inside my bowls. Thanks for the nice video and your advice.

Hi Barry! Not all woods spalt, but a lot of them can and it does seem like the lighter colored ones are more often spalted. In some, like walnut or cherry, only the sapwood gets spalting, but it's not desirable. I use the J rest because that's the only other one I have. That seemed like the more versatile option for what I mostly wanted to do at the time - deeper bowls and vases. I'm sure I'll add a C rest to my collection at some point; there have been times when one would come in handy. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

An excellent turn Chad....I am always amazed by the way fungus can actually enhance the beauty of wood, as this certainly indicates. By the way...I don't think it's possible to turn actual calabash (gourd) but this bowl is definitely calabashable! Best wishes and good health for the new year my friend.

I bet I could turn a calabash! Apparently, it's a very common term among woodturners in reference to a bowl of that shape, but I was unfamiliar with it until a year or two ago. Hell, I've even seen people nit-pick whether a shape is technically a calabash or not because it sits too high, too low, the curve isn't in the right place, blah blah blah... it's not like every calabash gourd is perfectly shaped the exact same way. Geez. Anyway... I hope you're having a great new year so far!
