I challenge you to a duel! For a great cause - join me in participating in an epic challenge dreamed up by the one and only @texashula2213 . Let’s make some magic wands for @CampKorey‘s upcoming installation of an incredible replica of Diagon Alley from Harry Potter, which of course includes Ollivander’s Wand Shop. Hula’s trying to get 1,000 wands sent to Camp Korey, which is a non-profit camp in Mt Vernon, WA just for kids with serious life-altering medical conditions. They have tons of adaptive programs that lets these kids have a camp experience just like any other kid, and best of all there is absolutely no cost to the family. So fire up that lathe and make some #MagicForCampKorey! There is no set deadline to have these completed - Wizard’s Alley is set to open in the beginning of summer this year, so there’s plenty of time!
Send wands to:
Camp Korey
24880 Brotherhood Rd
Mt Vernon, WA 98274
C/O Jonathan Chambers (the original mastermind behind the Diagon Alley Set!)
Also, if you are in Europe and want to participate, look up hulas_woodworks and matthes.harms - Matthes is collecting wands from Europe and will mail a consolidated shipment by the end of March to save on shipping, so let’s make this a world-wide effort!

Makes me even happier to know Hula--he's a great dude already, and to see this great, giving heart reaching out to the kiddos going to Camp Korey, and then spreading the word around for other turners to join him?! Good work, Lisa. I think I will need to get in on this one as I was planning to make one this morning for my daughter for Valentine's Day. Regarding your skew, see if you can ease off the tailstock pressure, even if it's just between centers. I find that is one of my bigger sources of vibration. And, I'll quote Mr. Richard Raffan on this, if you're getting vibration your edge isn't sharp enough or your speed is not high enough. Not always the solution to the problem but something to consider. Another thing, curly Maple! Beautiful wood and my favorite tool handle is made out of it, turned exclusively with my skew. It likes to tear out with planning cut. Ironically, gentle peeling cuts were what I used for the finishing cut on that specific tool handle I'm thinking of. Love the look of that wood, find it a lot easier to work with in side grade orientation. Thanks for the challenge.
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow Жыл бұрын
Yay Jay! Thanks for accepting the challenge and helping us meet Hula’s vision to get the kids some awesome props! I did actually back the tailstock pressure off a bit about halfway thru but it didn’t seem to make much difference. I also stink at honing so my skew edge is coming off a 600 grit CBN wheel but according to Alan Lacer that’s not sharp enough. I should’ve upped the speed a little more and I might’ve gotten past that vibration and to the sweet spot so I’ll try that next time. I haven’t had time to just go to the shop and practice the skew - I watch all the skew gurus and think “ok, I think I can do this!” And then go to the shop and am still like doh! Not so much. But I’ll get after it eventually 😂

Dale Haskin, I'm with you on the 2 turn bowl. I find that trueing up a warped bowl is many times harder and more time consuming than just turn a dry piece, sure the piece will take longer, more sharpening etc.

It has a built-in noise reduction feature that works quite well but it does make my voice sound a little funny. A couple suggestions: Add color to the wands using wood dyes or kid safe colored pens. The more color, the faster the kids grab them. And they will be able to remember which one is theirs. Leather wrist loop long enough to assist medical grip problems is handy. Also, make the handle grip length long enough for your own hand, too long is better than too short. Drill and fill a rattle handle is a fun option. To add a “core” make a two piece wand drilling out a longer cavity on one wood with a shorter tenon on the other piece. Use wood glue, not CA to join the two pieces together. Each wand I make comes with a tag indicating the length, the wood(s) used, and what insert if it has one. Just forwarded this video to our turning club. We are here in Washington, so I think we should be able to send a wand or two in support of the camp!

A big bang and my wife dissapered and was never to be seen again, can only hear her trying to get out of the walls she is treapped in inside my workshop. :) Good you helping with msking all these for the kids, they will love them. Hopefully as much i love the Harry Potter movies ( based on a true store i have heard. Very nice drawing of Mr Beagle you have there, did he draw it himself ? I go out try make some wands now and try burning like you did. Thank you for this tips Lisa. I am not sure if i can send the wands to Campcorey, it will cost a lot maybe. I check it out. I don't like the skew either .. how much pressure did you have on it? Sometimes too much pressure will cause vibration. The kids will love them.
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow Жыл бұрын
Maybe too much, though I did back it off a bit about halfway through and it didn’t help the vibration much. Maybe if I’d increased the speed some more it would’ve taken it out - I know there’s a sweet spot and a lot of times it’s past where the vibration is as far as speed goes.

I've been making some wands my self and a well blanced length in my oppinion is when you angle your upper and lover arm at a 90° angle and take the distance from the inside of your lower arm to about the lower third of your hand. Depending on the character and preference a bit longer or shorter. Also I made wands for kids generaly (a bit) longer than this asumption since they still grow...

@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Honestly just about everything about the lathe can be dangerous but I felt quite safe here. Spindle turners do use their hands as a “steady rest” with long thin spindles and it was already mostly shaped and pretty smooth. Because of the way my tool rest is shaped (slopes away from the workpiece) there is empty space behind and under the spindle. You’ll notice I did. It wear the glove I normally wear when turning, and I was very aware of where my left arm was - it would be more likely that my sleeve got caught than my fingers, but I’m no expert. Watch some of the skew gurus and see how they work and what they teach and only turn how you feel safe 👍
