Today's project is the mother of all scrap bowls! I've been hoarding......I mean saving all of the scraps from cutting boards and bowls. I finally have enough to make a bowl. I didn't want to glue the pieces together with wood glue. I wasn't sure how it would work out, but I was hoping that the resin would get into the seams, cracks, and crannies. It was either going to be a complete disaster or an amazing bowl! Thankfully it was the latter.
The scraps consisted of walnut, Purple Heart, cherry, padauk, mesquite, maple, and birds eye maple. I love the way the bowl ended up. I hope you enjoy this project as much as I did.

The bowl is really nice. I like the contrast of the different types of wood. Talk to Doug Moore about removing pieces from the mold. And BTW talk all you want.

I'm pretty sure I've seen other videos with a mould release spray that you can spray in first before you cast, that way it pops out easier. Good job on this project man!

I have to admit, when I saw you were using black resin, I thought it would ruin that bowl. Wow, was I wrong! The black outlining the different scraps, and filling in cracks actually looks great. Please keep up the good work. I am really enjoying all the wood turning videos, even though the last time I went anywhere near a lathe was high school shop class in the 80s. I wish I had the money for the lathe and the tools to take up turning myself.

I was wondering if you would like fly apart being held only by a little superglue in some places. This makes me think to try doing a similar thing using a spacer between all the blocks to get even more black in the gaps

Funny thing that didn't make it into the video was that I squeezed the dye bottle a little too much and the dropper cap and half the content of the bottle fell into the resin. So it turned out darker than I originally wanted it to, but I love the way it turned out. Thank you Mark! - Ed

Thank you Jay! To start, I go slow so I'm not slinging it everywhere. For the abrasive paste, I'll take the lather up to 500 rpm. For the polishing paste, I go up to 1,000 rpm. I hope that helps brother! Have a blessed day! - Ed
