Woodturning: Punky Flame Boxelder - Shear Scraping for the Best Finish
I started this project right before I had shoulder surgery, like the night before I had surgery 🤣
I have a bunch of this flame boxelder - it was a little punky to start with and it is only getting punkier. I used the shear scraping technique to help get rid of the tear out and finished the piece about 6 weeks after I’d started it. I talk about shear scraping and recommend the following videos by the pros for the exact definition and proper technique:
Lyle Jamieson
kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHWsp6eobLinq6Msi=d77dH1IJh4Ca3r9P
Reed Gray aka RoboHippy
kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpaymYOnhNiCiNUsi=Qy1ePtoEUpS5uO2-
I finished the piece with General Finishes Arm-R-Seal Gloss and it’s not my favorite - it took 3 coats of the finish plus Brad’s Sanding Paste and buffing with the Beall Tripoli and White Diamond wheels to get it to a point I was satisfied. Using Brad’s Tung Wax or Tung Honey is much faster, looks just as good, and is food safe so I’ll likely not use the GF again.

Glad you are on the mend. Boxelder can be so cool to turn. The red flame will fade away with time, but while it is around it is stunning.

Hi Chris! Yeah it's a bummer the color doesn't last forever but it does still add some cool dimension even once it's faded. 👍

Can't remember if I tell the story in my video on shear scraping or not, but I will never get tired of telling it. Lyle always spells it Sheer cut while most of the rest of us spell it Shear. We were down in Phoenix at the symposium some years back and he was in the booth across from me, and we got to chat a bunch during classes when there were no people wandering through. So, I asked Lyle, about it. Lyle, by sheer, do you mean like the nighty you want the Missus to wear???? I got the mother of all eye rolls from him.... No, No, No, like the sheer face of a cliff..... The shavings are very sheer/shear, either way you spell it. For sure, the burnished burr is the best and sharpest cutting edge you can get. Hope your shoulder is doing great! I had hoped to make the Symposium in Portland since it is just down the road from me, but I will be taking a cross country road trip to Maine. My best friend is going to be a grandma and her daughter lives in Maine. Never been there before.. Maybe I will be up in St. Paul next year. A new thing in the flat work world are ceramic top cotes. I did post about it on the AAW site. Interesting stuff. I did try that Rubio Monocote, and put 2 coats on a piece, and really liked it. May have to try the ceramic stuff too....

Hey Reed! You did tell the story in your video but it's a good one and bears repeating. I debated on spelling it sheer/shear but ultimately opted for shear since it's more commonly used. Both make sense to me and the end result is the same so I don't suppose it matters much. Shoulder is good. I mean the surgeon and PT are happy and say I'm making great progress but as usual I'm expecting too much too fast. I'm reading for it to stop hurting, though the pain is low it's been contestant since the surgery in November and it's starting to grind on me. But I knew it was a long recovery and I just couldn't put it off any further so imma keep pushing thru PT and working to get the strength and range of motion back. It's hard though because I've been protecting that joint for 20 years, trying to keep it from moving in a way that allowed it to dislocate, and that is burned into my subconscious somewhere so I'm fighting that too 🤣 Still trying to plan a trip to the PNW but won't be this year. Never been to Maine either, also on the bucket list. Enjoy your trip! 😃

A huge part of my recovery from hip and knee replacement was adjusting to being able to walk upright again... Old compensating habits. Told my surgeon that he needed the clip from the old Ringo Starr Cave Man movie where they start to walk upright......

Hi Bruce! Shoulder's doing great, just waaay slower than I'd hoped. Surgeon is very happy with progress but warns me it'll probably be 6 months before it's actually healed and I have the strength and mobility back 😖

I've been putting this off for 20 years but figured it isn't gonna get any easier the older I get (and it started dislocating more frequently) so I decided it was time. It's a ridiculously long recovery and I know I'm expecting too much too fast so I'm trying to be patient, but I'm ready for it to be better now! 🤣

Hey Stuart! You changed your handle, I almost didn't recognize you 😁. Shoulder is doing well - I am (as usual) expecting too much too fast but the surgeon and PT are pleased so I guess I'll try and chill out. I mean I knew the recovery time could be 9 months (which is the biggest reason I really didn't want to do it) but that seems much longer when you're actually it in 🤣

Hi Lisa, great project. I would like to better understand how you strengthen or otherwise build up the wood fibre in a punky piece. I have some Elm that needs this from my parents grave and I’ll only get one shot at it.
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 4 ай бұрын
Hi Gerry! You can use shellac and it will help stiffen the fibers some. Thin CA glue will work on smaller areas but does stain so be aware. I used Minwax Wood Hardener on a piece of super, super soft beech - next video so in line!
