Woodturning | Punky Maple

In this video I turned a piece of Maple that turned out to be a little too punky to finish. There are a few things you can do with punky wood and I go over them in the video.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. I turn a lot of punkie wood. But what I do is mix a cheap can of varnish to 1 to 1 mix with thinner. I get the piece close to final shape then do several coats with the mix, letting it soak up as mush as possible. Then let it sit inside a dry box for a week before turning it to its final size. \it works well enough that I keep doing punkie wood

Very interesting & informative video Carl. I would soak it with a few coats of de-waxed Shellac and let it dry over night. You could then just sand it smooth. Hope that you & Robin are doing well! 👍👍

Carl, It is probably too late for the one turned bowl, but stabilizing in cactus juice might save the one that is not fully turned. Hollow out the inside as if you were doing a twice turned bowl. then fill it with cactus juice and put it into a vacuum bag. I used the technique in bags with good success and minimal cactus juice. Would be a good follow-up video.

If you do stabilize it, try adding some dye to the cactus juice and youmay land up with a reallynice piece instead offirewood!@@CarlJacobson

When it gets to this point it actually tears out little balls of grain. I will soak with shellac if i really want to try to keep it going.👍😀

I have had good luck using shellac on punky wood that just tares out. Multiple coats that the wood just sucks up. Last one I just finished I went with the carbide for the finish cuts after trying bowl gouges., and it seemed to work. Very, very light cuts and lots of sanding. Sometimes sand and some more shellac and sand again. I have not been turning very long, but I figure I am learning how to fix different problems by sticking with a problem piece of wood. Plus, I am stubborn LOL.

I have flooded on penetrating epoxy with fairly good results. Does shellac work better? Never tried that.

I have tried epoxy and it works well. I've never tried shellac I'll have to give it a try.

Hi Robin and Carl! Great stuff as usual! Always learn from you guys! I do a lot of vacuum stabilizing with Cactus Juice also. Good stuff! A good portion of my projects are hybrid stuff with urethane resin combined with the woods, so stabilizing adds a little insurance. Looking forward to your next live one! Best wishes! P.S. Too much for sanding sealer? I have some very old maple that's pretty but has some similar characteristics. I was planning on cactus juice. I need to grab a vacuum chamber though.

I think Cactus Juice is a great choice.

Shellac or sanding sealer or Minwax wood hardener all put a firm surface coat on the wood that can then be worked without tear out. Even moistening the wood with water will help in a pinch. I only do cactus juice if it is burl or curly maple with alternating grain direction. Even hair spray works (heavy saturating coat). I turn a little thick, apply sanding sealer, let dry then shear scrape. It may another layer of sealer if the tear out is deep. If I can crumble the wood with my fingers, I usually send it through the cactus juice routine.

Not every blank is worthy of time. Appreciate seeing things that don't always work out. One possible way to use a blank like that would be to abandon using it as a bowl and cut into smaller chunks for pen blanks, handles, or bottle stoppers and then stabilize the smaller pieces in Cactus Juice under the assumption that the smaller pieces would stabilize more successfully. The spalting and figure could then be exploited in those smaller pieces. [Saying this as someone from a state with not a lot of trees, so all wood is somewhat precious. If you are in a place with an abundance of wood, my suggestion is probably more work than it is worth]

I,ve had good results using min wax wood harder. Brush on a liberal coat let dry fore a few hours and re coat. If real soft 3 or 4 coats.

What about adding texture or carving or filigree work to it and adding some color with paints etc...? The punkiness could add character combined with some of those other things. Great teaching video though!!

We thought about adding something like mother of pearl but I just wasn't sure it would still look good. Maybe I should put it back on the lathe and give it a try.

Hola Carl, sugerencia para evitar el desgranado de ese tipo de madera, después que lo hayas rebajado por dentro, en diluyente mezcla pegamento para madera, que quede bastante líquido para que escurra con facilidad en los poros de la madera, repite hasta notes que ya no absorbe, después lo llenas con aserrín que esté muy seco, con eso evitas que el cuenco no se manche de otro tono, el aserrín seco absorbe la humedad en exceso, saludos cordiales desde Valdivia Chile.

I've successfully turned a lot of punky wood. By soaking it with thin shellac (shellac flakes dissolved in dna) I got a a first class finish

Well, that sucked lol. I'm hoping you stablized the first piece and finished it; the grain on both was beautiful. Part-way through I thought maybe burnsihing would help, but would have just made wider holes before crumbling. It did make a good learning video, though. It's good to watch both the successes and the failures..
