Spot on! I find myself going to those same tools all the time and I have a fortune's worth of tools on the racks.

Hey Carl!! I need to first say that your channel is what got me back into turning. It's been about 20 years and I'm 40 but I'm back in the saddle. Anyway, I'm looking for a solid set of traditional turning tools that can also be sharpened. There are so many different manufactures and it's quite confusing. I'll be buying a set of carbide as well but if you can recommend a mid-range set, I'd be forever grateful!

Great job Carl - nice to see someone helping the newbies! When I started, most of the guys at "woodstores" acting like I was crazy asking questions about the tools or not knowing the name and use of the tool. Nice job on your part!!!

Great info Carl Thanks. I just started turning about 6 months to a yr ago to add something new to my shop. I mainly do scroll work, but turning is such a nice relief from it even being in the beginner stage. I have read that one should stay away from buying sets, but I bought 3 of them over the yrs, and just bought a set of 3 bowl gouges last yr. Want to give a go at some bowls, and this yr got a set of carbide tipped tool.

Good overview Carl. Funny you mention a scraper as the first tool you'd lose. I have a few and hate them. Seems like every time I use one, I ruin whatever I'm turning. Though most people hate skews, I'll take it over a scraper any day - I love it because I usually don't have to sand. FYI, there are 2 methods of sizing bowl gouges. UK measures the size of the flute, US measures size of the bar itself. Dunno what you're talking about with that spindle gouge though... it's just nicely broken in!

Hi Carl! Thanks for all of your videos! I am new to wood turning and still learning the basics. Could you do a short video like this one on how you present each tool to the wood and explaine when you rotate the bevel of the tool to the left or the right. It seems like you use the tip of the tools at times and then you switch to the side of the tool. Could you also show the different types of cuts like push and pull cuts, sheer cut and so on and how you use them. Thanks!!!!!

Hi Pete, Thank you, The spindle gouge is for light and detail work. The bowl gouge is much thicker and takes out a lot of material. You can use the bowl gouge for doing detail work but don't try to use the spindle gouge for things like hollowing it's not safe. Take care, Carl

Another difference is that spindle & roughing gouges have tangs where they enter the handle, so they're not strong as a bowl gouge that has the full-size rod. The flute on a spindle/detail gouge is much shallower than a bowl gouge as well. One form of hollowing that spindle gouges excel at is end-grain hollowing, or hollowing a piece turning with the grain running parallel with the axis of the lathe. Most everything is backwards in end-grain hollowing though - you even work from the middle out!

My good lathe and good tools are in storage at the moment. I got a smaller lathe out to use and bought a cheap set of harbor freight tools. My point is, where can I find a decent bowl gouge or hollowing system?

thanks, Carl, nice overview. I notice you have Sorby chisels. I just bought two, a roughing gouge and a spindle gouge as I had neither. I inherited an old Craftsman set and 5 tools came with my Shopsmith. So, I'm just getting started.

Question, I was watching Cap n eddie on sharping, so, I'm wondering can we use a slip strop to do touch up? I make my own carving knives and hook knives for Coast Salish style carving, and after getting my bevel, temper and "polished edge", (a mirror slices better through wood) I use a slip strop to "keep the edge", so can we do or should/do we want the same thing? any replies welcomed. Thanks for the info, I just started turning and really enjoy it.

I would appreciate someone to answer my question. I’m quite sure that I’ve seem Carl use one of these but am unable to find it. What is the turning tool called that is capable of making repetitive decorative marks on a turning? Thank you very much for your help!

Because It's a SPINDLE roughing gouge. The tang of that gouge is a weak point and may break using it on a bowl.
