In this woodturning video I turn a piece of Red Cedar into a shallow live-edge bowl.
I get a lot of inspiration from ‪@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop‬ for his amazing work.
Additionally, check out ‪@WoodturningWithJohnMarro‬ for some excellent segmented work and other fun projects!
Big Thank you to ‪@BradsWorkbench‬ for the discount code for his abrasive and finish kits (DOUBLED10)!

Stunning Daniel. Enough said. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw PS I'm going to write to your Congress asking them to outlaw Red Cedar in the US and that in future ALL pieces of Red Cedar MUST be ship to a small village in South Wales UK,

with all that sanding sealer, how does the thin CA, or the wax finish actually penetrate the wood?
@TournageDubois
@TournageDubois Жыл бұрын
In the case, I'm not wanting it to penetrative the wood, just to seal any gaps between the bark and the wood directly. It still works really well. Thanks for watching and the comment!

Obviously you use a recess/mortise here, but I've been wondering are tenons (in general) safer for softer wood like cedar? I havent seen any concrete answers, but I would think since a tenon is compressing the wood inwards any breaks/fly-offs would be reduced compared to a mortise. Or are the risks about equal with the amount of material in/around the jaws playing a bigger role? I've got some red cedar of my own and I'd like to try my hand with mortises if possible
@TournageDubois
@TournageDubois 10 ай бұрын
I usually prefer a tenon, as I do think they are stronger. I ALWAYS use a tenon on endgrain, but once in a while use a mortise on side grain, depending on circumstances. Short story long, ai probably wouldn't do a mortise for cedar again.

I usually use tenons also on softer woods, but I've twisted tenons off on cedar more than once when getting a catch!
@TournageDubois

I have had the same thing happen as well. Cedar is a beautiful wood, but since it's a softer wood it's kind of hit and miss.
@sovietholdoutxd7783
@sovietholdoutxd7783 9 ай бұрын
@dicktillotson1431 I just had that happen to me! Gonna either use a glue block and a faceplate or just screw the faceplate directly into the bowl so I can finish it. After that, I think I'm done with Cedar because it's way too brittle, not to mention the health risks from the dust
@dicktillotson1431
@dicktillotson1431 9 ай бұрын
I think a glue block may be the answer! I haven't ever tried that, but I've watched a channel here on KZbin (can't remember whose channel off the top of my head), that uses glue blocks almost exclusively and he swears by them.
