As I was watching, I was dying to put a tennis ball or something between the goblet rim and the tailstock for some stabilization. Is there a reason that this is a poor idea? Beautiful goblet!

I do use that method on longer stem goblets ... but on this occasion it wasn't needed. Thanks for watching.

Thanks to the storms the other day, I spent the morning cleaning a fallen yew tree. I now have first dibs on the whole tree and would your ideas on what I should use that beautiful red hearted wood for. I also have the whole crown that will be pure burr wood. It’s where all the branches sprout out bs the tree must be very, very old. I am thinking of seasoning it for a few years and then turning some and making veneer out of the burr segment. Your expert advice would be so helpful and I’m sure I could save you a bit if you wish. You can even leave it a year or so and get it seasoned if your like.

Hi the heart wood makes lovely bowls, if cut correctly you can get an edge of sap wood at the edge too. The limbs are just great for any spindle turning. The great thing about Yew is that is always the star of the show. It is prone the heat checking so when sanding don't create heat by using high speeds and force .... gently gently catche monkey 🙂. Oh and wear respiratory equipment as the dust can be toxic. Enjoy the tree!!

@@MikeWaldt thank you so much for your response. I’m still recovering from my stormy morning’s efforts and collecting as much of the trunk as possibly as other wood to season for the fire. One question is how king I should leave the wood to season before I even start trying to fashion the bowl blanks? I am such an amateur and there is so much bad Information out there. I have seen videos where one shapes the outside and them microwaves the wood or just leaves it - or even steams it. I’ll only get a few tries at this precious wood and would love all the advice you can give. I even have the crown or whole top of the tree where is splits into the branches and would make the most fantastic burr wood. Please let me know - and if you would like some then let’s se what we can do. It would be an absolute joy to see a master like yourself product a piece of natural art from this

You can turn a bowl "wet" leaving the walls approximately 1" - 1.5" thick depending on the diameter. This allows for warping along the end grain, and allows you to finish turn when dry, and have enough wall thickness to make round. Where are you based as a matter of interest.
@MikeWaldt9 ай бұрын
Also I did a video on finish turning a wet turned bowl which might be of interest. Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGe7hpipodOVfJYsi=kKLvMLsYRcOp6JuV Cheers Mike
